Cool Woo For Introductions

Introductions, hmm my favourite

I'm Robb, I live in Derby, UK
I have a Cinammon Cockatiel and I call him Charlie, he is actually more likely to be a she, but im stuck in the habit of referring to him as a he.
I have had him about a year now, i don't believe he is much older than that.
This is the first bird i've owned so i am fairly new at this. all help is appreciated. I'm trying to get charlie to be a little more tame, he doesn't bite me or anything, i just can't get near him at all, he is fine till i go in the cage etc then he just get's scared. i darent take him out the cage while he is like that. but in time hopefully.
well, i look forward to my time on this forum.

Hi and welcome.

I whole year and the poor dear is still scared? Out of cage and one-on-one time are very important for the social/mental well being of parrots, so you'll want to work with him. But you know that... you're here to find out how. Right?

So, here's the part where I rave about the benefits of clicker training for birds. Melinda Johnson's group on Yahoo is a great resource on clicker training. Her philosophy (and it's a great one) is that when we teach our companion birds how to do "stupid parlor tricks", the benefit we really get out of it is a better relationship with our feathered friends.

Stewie came to me not very well socialized. I started clicker training, and not even that much, and it has totally changed our dynamic. He loves doing tricks (or rather, he loves getting treats for doing tricks) and he's a much nicer bird -- all because clicker training teaches us both how to communicate with each other and it convinced him that I'm not so bad after all.

The site does a much better job explaining it than I do, so take a minute to join the group: Bird-Click : Bird-Click

sit close to the cage and read to him, and talk to him softly. this should help with the fear.
