I'm glad I received a message this morning from a moderator informing me that I HAVEN'T introduced myself in this part of the board! I think I got caught up in the excitement of this site... it's TOO GOOD!
I'm an avid bird lover! Weird, but we've named all of our birds after Invader Zim characters, if no one is familiar with it, PLEASE check it out! It's an awesome cartoon!
Here's some background for ya!
My family has always had birds in the house when I was growing up. We've had a lot of the smaller types (parakeets & finches mostly) but we did have a blue and gold, named Elvis. He was the absolute sweetest guy in the world, but my parents had to give him up as he was getting too loud for where we lived. I was crushed- and my dad could feel it.
I ended up purchasing a parakeet named Petey that I had for about 8 years, and he was an absolute riot! I was even more crushed when he had passed and several months later I had a little yellow parakeet that inherited
many names! Anything from "baby" to "mustang sally" etc... and I also took him with me several years later when I moved to North Carolina when my husband was in the Marines, and he absolutely fell in love with him and then started looking at birds seriously. Well, he didn't have a name, and my husband, Tyler, named it "Skoodge-" also from the show. We had picked up a friend for him, "Zim," and when Skoodge had passed, we decided to get friend for Zim since she was lonely, and that ended up being "Keef."
While we were living there, we had picked up a Sun Conure from a breeder and ended up having to wean it. It was the best experience I could ever wish for. This little guy grew up to be such the character... and one of my favorite memories was when he was in this terrarium-style set up, Tyler and I were playing Monopoly late at night and that little guy escaped! He walked out of our bedroom door, almost strutting with the look on his face like "what are you doing in
my house?" It was his house. His name is Gir. And he is JUST like Gir, a total clown and goofball that wants to be everyone's friend. He absolutely loves to give people kisses!
After Tyler was retired, we drove back to California- and I picked up a cockatiel for my papa. Mom was a bit nervous since it had been a long time since she had one, but now she won't leave it alone. I get to see him a couple of times a month and it's amazing what they can pick up. He was named "Little Elvis."
I came across an ad for a Severe Macaw on Craigslist, and since they were local and that damn Cameroon scam wasn't as nuts, I was beyond trusting with this person. I had driven down with my dad since Tyler was at school, and it was the best feeling in the world when you walk up to the house, and see this big cage with a sweetie in it. We named her "Gaz"- sometimes we call her Gazmondo. But she's just like the character, she's independent (at SOME times, she's really attached to her papa) and she does the same type of, I guess, growl sound. But she is starting to talk and loves her bath time!
Now... we're on to having an African Grey. We've been looking to pick one up for a while and would love to have one of these little guys in our family. We don't really care for kids, and the profession Tyler's going in, we couldn't do it for a long time anyway. School is expensive and it's going to be a couple of years for this... but it'll be well worth it because he'll be so happy. Honestly, we'd much rather enjoy the company and even the SOUND of parrots vs. a Child any day.
Sorry for such a long intro, I don't know why I got caught into writing a novel.
