Hi and welcome.
I have a small petting zoo in my apartment too!
We have cats, reptiles, and small furry critters. As long as you have a safe cat-free room for your bird to come out and get individual attention daily, it can work, but parrots do need out-of-the-cage time and attention, so think about it. I had a baby Meyers and I felt we didn't have enough time for him, so we re-homed him. I felt awful in my "failing" him but I didn't think having a young bird who needed lots of work and attention was fair to the bird.
My significant other and I now make sure one of us spends at least an hour a night with Jack (our brownheaded parrot who is older and is already fully hand-trained etc) and he gets at least 2 hours out of the cage.
Whatever you decide, this is a GREAT site with wonderful and knowledgable people so don't be afraid to ask questions!
Lisa

Hi Kaylie, I'm BeBe and am the proud owner, or should I say, am owned by two cats, Boo kitty two and Trixie and one lovebird who owns us all, tweedy. When he doesn't get enough attention he lets us know and my husband takes him into the bedroom to let him fly. Or he puts the cats in the bedroom and lets tweedy fly around the livingroom. He is quite a character, he plays games with boo kitty to see who is faster at "tag you're it". So far there's been no touching, the cage bars are too narrow for that, but its fun to watch them. I'm fairly new to this site also and enjoy reading the posts and seeing all the beautiful pictures of the birds. We used to have a sun conure who was my baby, but he swallowed an earring and after surgery to remove it he passed away, it was too late to save him. If we had known about the wonderful bird vet in las vegas who does surgery even on parakeets, our mose too would still be with us. Let this be a warning to all bird lovers, don't wear earrings small enough to be swallowed while having your bird on your shoulder. This happened so fast that there wasn't anything I could do. I miss him even to this day and its been almost 5 years. Anyway thats my soap box lecture for the day......hugs, BeBe from tucson

Hi Kaylie!
I think a parrotlet is a great choice- I was even thinking about one of those when considering adopting. Birds are great! But just about whatever happens in your life you should be able to keep a nice little bird like that. We travel a lot and it has been hard with Kermit- he can be a bit loud at times and his cage is fairly large and heavy. If I had gotten a parrotlet I probably could bring him just about anywhere.

Welcome to birdboard!

Jonah pics

Here is Jonah, my baby! He is so funny, over the last few weeks I have learned so much about him. He loves boxes. If I need him to get into his cage all I have to do is show him a box and he runs in so I will give it to him. Usually by the time I get home he has chewed it to bits. Last week he was hiding in the box and when my daughter got home she went crazy looking for him thinking that he got out some how. when she called his name finally, she noticed the box moving, she called him again and he popped his head out. she said it was very funny! I also found out that he does not like nuts at all. The only nut he will even play with is a peanut. he chews the shell and drops the peanut.
