newbie

Hi, I'm Terry and I live in Torquay in Devon, England. Having recently lost a very close family member I decided to get myself a new companion. Many years ago I kept and bred budgies, but decided I wanted something bigger, so on a trip to the petshop I saw this beautiful Golden mantled rosella. It's about 20 weeks old so still a bit young to tell which sex. But it is beautiful and has settled really well on its own. Love the fact that on being let out of the cage it has a good fly around the room, but when it's had enough it goes back in on its own. Eats like a horse and I am trying out different fruits etc to see what it does or doesn't like- apple seems to be the favourite at the moment. It's very timid and tends to back away when I put my hand in the cage, but is just starting to come towards me when I am just close the cage & hates it when I leave the room and continuously whistles at me until I come back in.

Welcome, Terry. I'm sorry about your loss. Does your golden-mantled like veggies?

Welcome!!

Sooo very sorry to hear about your loss. Welcome home to your new Fid. Fruits and veggies everyday...perfect. You need to get a list from the internet of which ones are toxic to birds. You said that he loves apples. My fids love then too but the seeds are toxic from the info I have. Looking forward to hearing more about the fun the two of you are having.

Welcome Terry! I am sorry about your loss. Thank you for choosing one of our beautiful Aussie parrots to live with you. You can try mung beans, lentils, broccoli and corn, all my birds love them. If you want to know the sex, you can send a feather in for DNA analysis. I found this in Parrots mag (UK based). www.avianbiotech.co.uk

Hi Folks, thanks for the welcome and your kind thoughts.
Hi Tiki, I never thought of veggies, bought a small piece of broccoli today and oh boy! did it love it. As to the corn, what way do you use it? on the cob or can I used tinned- wrong time of the year for cob in the UK.
Bridgette, never heard that about apple pips, but will make sure I remove them. The only fruit I was told not to feed was avacado, but there again who can afford avacado anyway:-)

Terry,
You should be able to buy frozen corn on the cob at the grocery store, just look in the frozen vegetable section at the store. I cook mine in the microwave according to package directions. After it is completely cooled, just slice the whole cob into wheels, to a size that your bird can handle.
My Cags would rather have corn on the cob than anything!
PS. Welcome, you will find many hours of enjoyment and knowledge here.
