New from Quincy, MA
Hey birds and their people:
My partner and I have four parrots that we adopted from our local parrot shelter - Foster Parrots. We have Chi-Chi the Eclectus who came to us on his last legs - just saved from being put down by a wise vet who suggested holding off. After four months of hand feeding and TLC, he rallied from 310g to 420g! He regained feathers and is ornery as ever. He loves me in the evenings but chases me out of my own bedroom (where his cage is) during the day. Mango, a Sun Conure and Kiki, a Greencheek are bonded and love to explore and get into mischief. They have their own sunny large room filled with perches and toys. Mango LOVES me and this can create problems until I shower Kiki with praise. Then I own them! Danny the Cockatiel is our most recent addition to the family. Poor little guys was brought to the shelter by someone who "did not have time for him" and noted that it seemed like he could not see very well. Turns out the bird is blind and from birth. He just wilted in the shelter - head drooped and no energy. We took him home and are just amazed at how well he is doing. Warm sunlight, good food and lots of attention work wonders. He is curious and explores, happily preens and bathes and loves to try new foods. He is on a shoulder whenever we are home and he is affectionate as can be. |

Welcome to Birdboard. I am so glad that Danny has a caring and wonderful owner.

Photos
Chi Chi when sick (Feb 06) (photos to left and right) and months later (center) - healthy as a horse and showing some nice tail feathers.
Recently he has started plucking again - a problem with some eclectus especially those that were not happy for a long time. But he seems very happy and we indulge him to a point that makes friends and family gag. My other birds' photos are on my home computer - I will post those soon... |

You should hook up with some of the other Ekkie owners here. They may be able to help with his diet for one. Sometimes Certain foods will make this sensitivity more pronounced. Have you seen the web site Land of Vos?
Eclectus Land of Vosmaeri Feather Destruction He's really lovely - it is too bad he's plucking again. I'd also suggest keeping a journal. There may be aspects we're missing. How many hours of sleep - where the cage is placed - what foods he's eaten this week - anything like seasonal allergies or dry air can contribute .... Lots of people have tried some strange stuff & some works for their bird: I came across someone who gave their bird a large swing with tassels all over the overhead part - so the bird is kind of protected & at the same time has lots to preen. Someone gave their bird chamomile tea in the morning & put it diluted in the misting water. Hope that this will go away eventually & the poor thing can live a good life with all those lovely feathers. Last edited by homebird; 04-21-2007 at 04:05 AM. |
