Smile Hello from Fort Washington, MD!

Hi Everyone,

I have owned two parakeets since 1995 (Rocky, deceased 1998); and, since then until the present with Rocky2, the light of my life! I first found that I had to have one of these sweet, lovable budgerigars when my friend asked me to "parakeet sit" Rocky. He was blue and white and could say "I love you Rocky bird" among other words he wished to repeat, whenever he felt like talking to anyone. He was a very lovable little guy who would fly from his cage to his favorite landings in our bedroom, gently step on my finger, kiss through the cage, and didn't make a lot of screeching noise... but, he could bite pretty hard (no blood, just playfully tug at my thumb nail), and he sang songs that he heard. He could sing very good as he sang along with my favorites.

So, when my friend returned after two weeks, I missed my friend's little baby bird. He was great company but, would only pay attention to me and not my husband who fed him and cleaned his cage. I read that they usually respond to one person at first, so maybe, we didn't have him long enough.

We went to our neighborhood Petsmart and bought a bird with the same markings. He was an older bird and the salesman said they can live a long time with loving care, up to 10 years. Anyway, he only lasted 9... because he took a hard fall after hitting the floor one day. My heart fell with him as I sat helpless in my wheelchair, my husband was at work. I was frantic and called the bird vet at the pet store who told me it sounded hopeless because there was blood running down his little legs. I prayed for a merciful, quick end while still hoping for a miraculous healing.

He layed there a while, softly tweeting for a few minutes. But, this brave little soul... was so courageous, he never whimped or let out a sound. I sobbed and sobbed until my whole body hurt from watching him, literally, die. It was time for my husband to come home and after calling and texting all day, I saw "my little Rocky the Bird" struggle to get up and fly (for the last time) to the top of his cage. The bird specialist was right. He went to the highest place in his world, and by nightfall, he somehow got into the open-door of his cage and died through the night. He never made sound... I cannot tell you but, maybe most of you know just how I felt then, and for many days after that. There were so many memories and I missed him so. I had taught him so much, especially how to sing to t.v. commercials, etc., I would substitute his name on TV shows like "The Price is Right," he loved the applause. I'd say, "Come on down Rocky the bird!." He just skipped around and tweet-tweeted happily. He was a companion for me because I've been homebound, wheelchair-bound since 1994. So, you know that I had to get another little birdie.

Thus, on Christmas eve 2003, my husband and our friend gave me a tiny newly born parakeet and I named him Rocky2... the best gift ever. He is green and yellow parakeet with a cute little blue spot next to his beak and a yellow tuft of "cockatiel-style" feathers on top of his head which sometimes pops up looking like a pompadoured hair style. We love him and adopted him as another of our children who brings joy and happiness into our lives, with much less drama too! I hope these come out so you can enjoy the following photos of Rocky2:

Peace,
Gwendolyn
