Welcome! I am in upstate NY as well, but I am over on the border of Southern Vermont. I adore Amazons and share my life with 5 of them, you can see in my signature. I also have 5 wonderful dogs, 1 fluffy cat, 2 house bunnies and 3 guinea pigs.

Wow, how long do you have to hand feed the tiel? I have a 24 y/o tiel, but didn't hand feed him. My yellow front amazon I hand fed from 3 feedings through weaning, but that was 11 years ago. I don't remember exactly, but I think she went from 3 feedings to weaning in a month or so. But, my memory isn't what it used to be.... I guess as time goes on the "pain", worry, and fear I had during the hand-feeding time subsides. I remember running home from work at lunch to feed, up in the middle of the night, and my hands being chapped because I was endlessly, obsessively and compulsively dipping them in bleach water along with everything else I could find to dip short of my fid. Luckily, she made it through the process with flying colors! It was my first and only hand fed, and looking back, I now realize how fortunate I was that the process, and weaning, was a real snap comparatively speaking (considering how little I knew, especially). No problems at all in any regard - except when she really slowed down eating, I went ASAP to the avian vet, and he said - WHOA! She's ready to be weaned and is at her adult weight already! Stop feeding her are you trying to feed her to death? Well, I guess I WOULD do it again..... I just remember being so nervous about the process! I sure could have used birdboard back then!!!!
