Here is Julien :)
Hi everyone, My name's Julien, I'm 18 yo and I'm french (I'm sure you'd have noticed it :p sorry for my oppriximate english)
I've just discovered this web site (yesterday when I was looking for informations about the severa macaw). Now you know what kind of parrot is my favourite Here in France there are a lot of laws concerning parrots owning. To own main of the parrots you must have an official autorisation. And I passed it for three species : the yellow crested cockatoo (cacatua sulphurea sulphura, the severa macaw and the illiger's macaw). You've to complete a big file about you and the way you'll raise your bird (cage's size etc.) I don't know where most of you come from but I was suprised (no, flabbergasted ! ) when I saw what parrots some of you owned (scarlet macaw (actually the one of my dreams....), hyacinth (!!!!! ), severa, maracana, etc. There can be numerous explanations : you're all rich , the parrots are free (?). Here it's certainely not the case : 1 hyacinth costs about 15 000€.I think I can stop writing. Let's read this forum's content :) |

Thank you for welcoming me
I already know what kind of parrot I wanna bring home : a severe macaw. I love them so much... but they're very rare here in France... I noticed some of you owned one (including you Conure & Macaw Mom). By the way, Nalah & Romeo are just beautiful. Could you tell me more 'bout them ? I'm looking for a severe since 2 or 3 years

If your talking about $15k Francs, thats $3,000 USD.
Now, to compare, Hyacinths here easily sell $10k-$15k USD. That's $48k-$72K Francs. I haven't heard of anyone needing to take any sort of test to own a parrot, and I'm VERY glad that they have that test in France! Here in America (and many places around the world), if you have the money (that is, if the bird is not free), more often than not the bird is yours.... Unless either one, you adopt from a rescue (which may have ridiculous expectations) or for someone who genuinely cares for their birds and screens potential adopters... I can understand it may be a pain to do a test like that, but IMO it's needed here in the US! Would love to learn more about it and how they screen you for certain species! And welcome to BB!

Hi Julien!
Welcome to BB! Your English is a lot better than my French. My grandfather was from France, but I never learned the language. He and my grandmother and aunt spoke French around us children so that we couldn't know the adult conversations. I don't have a macaw, but like you have seen, lots of people on here do, and can tell you lots! I hope you get your dream bird some day.

I was using FRF instead of EUR. I use XE for currency conversion.... And this is what I got...
15,000.00 EUR = 20,455.18 USD 10,000.00 USD = 7,333.292 EUR 15,000.00 USD = 10,999.94 EUR Our scarlets tend to go for $800-$2,000 (depending on if you go through a breeder, second hand home, or petstore). I have seen them as much as $3,000. As for the document, I'll see if I can translate it out later on! Thanks for the info!
