Hello All Really New Green Cheek Owner and New Jenday Owner

Hi my names Eric LT and I live in Eugene Oregon. I'm 24 and live with my girlfriend Holly and my chesapeake bay retriever Dez. How i became a bird owner was weird. I moved in with a room mate and he "had" a jenday conure Rocco. Now from what I can tell this poor bird had spent the last year in it's cage covered with weekly food and water. I immediately moved his cage into my room and he is now my new best friend. When I first discovered him he was in decent shape oddly. He didn't pluck his feathers and he still LOVES people. I did have to give him a round of antibiotics for a staff infection and something else. Other than that he is great. Now just today I went out and got a green cheek conure from petco for $400. He is 6 months old and very playful. I've been thinking about him for a week and met him on several occasions. Today i decided that i would take the plunge. Now I would like to have my two conures be buddies so they can play while I'm away. My jenday Rocco is interested in him but i want to be careful as he has the 95 pound dog scared of him (He is very strong as he is full flighted and i suspect he could do significant damage to my new green cheek pip). What is the best way to get them to like each other? I have their cages 3 inches apart so they can see each other but not touch. I have had them both on me but Rocco lunges at Pip. Pip seems like he just wants to rub up with Rocco and be his friend but Rocco doesn't dig this yet. Please help and if there are articles or discussions about this please point me to em. Thanks.

PS I will post pictures of my conures later tonight.

Congrats on two new buddies! Since you've only had Pip for a short time and who knows how long Rocco is used to being an only bird, it may take time for the two of them to really warm up to eachother, if they do.

Keeping the cages close but not too close (should have checked into quarantine and/or a vet check), and allowing them out of cage time away from their cages may help... however they *MUST* be supervised as Rocco could seriously injure Pip.

Supervised interaction is the key to getting your two birds "possibly" being buddies. Letting both birds see each other is important on a daily basis. This way they will get used to being in the proximaty of each other.

Be sure neither of them see you favoring the other over them. Don't want a territorial issue errupting. Give both equal attention and treats as well. Don't forget to keep the cages stocked with some fun toys as well :)

It took us about 3 months to get our fids liking each other... all under supervision:

These two pics are me closely supervising their intial visit:

This is them about a 3 to 4 months later unsupervised:

Now, occationally we'll even let them sleep together in the same cage at night (we have multiple happy huts in both cages). And when WE want a break, we can just put them in the same cage to play and keep each other entertained while we "take a day off". Good luck... if they get along you'll love it... truely keep trying and be very careful about it!

there's really no guarantee that they'll ever become buddies, but you can introduce them the way others suggested before and see what happens. bella and valo still don't like each other, but as long as i'm close by to jump in between fights i let them out together and do whatever they want... though they do end up in fights, it doesn't happen often (certainly no allopreening here LOL )

welcome to BB
