Lorikeet

Hi I am Petra and I am new to the Bird Board and would like to introduce myself. I own a green yellow breasted lorikeet Ricky. (a nectar eating bird) He is very tame but not very well trained. I would like to communicate a bit better with him.
Has anyone got a suggestion what treat to use for training? He is on wet and dry food.

I used to own a lorikeet before and she was potty trained, talked a lot and sat at the table with me eating out of her own little bowl. I used seeds as a reward everytime she did something right.

Sitting with wet or dry food in my hand as a quick reward is not successful. Has anyone got any ideas what to use for treats to train a yellow breasted lorikeet?

Ive never trained my lorikeets, but you should never give them seeds as a reward or food source.

I have heard that fruits are a good reward for lorikeets cos seeds wear down the brush on the tongue...welcome!

yay another lorikeet owner! Welcome! I use spinach for my lorikeet- never fails! Cheese, tiny apple pieces, tiny meat pieces, pumpkin, lettuce and wheat biscuits can be used. You could even try loading a feeder- syringe with 100% apple, orange or apricot juice and give your lorikeet a lick as a treat. Also a lick of lollipop works wonders, but I don't reccommend that cause human saliva is bad for birds!

Never thought about lollipops. what a teriffic idea. We use fruit pops and did not think to give him any as I was worried about the sugar content. But I guess for a training purpose it is an excellent tool. thank you
