Hi, I'm Ruth and I live and work in Clearwater, Florida. My husband and I have a quaker parrot named Lucky who is 4 years old. He was found in the middle of a busy street where a friend, with the aid of a passing police car, stopped and rescued him! He was not banded, was apparently wild, and was pretty scared and helpless. My friend gave him to me in the hopes that we would give him a good home. We took him to the vet right away who pronounced him healthy and he started us handfeeding him with baby bird food through a syringe. He has been happy and healthy ever since!
I do have a question for bird lovers out there, however. I did ask the vet the same question during his annual checkup (his vital signs, etc. were all just fine). It seems like Lucky's been molting quite a lot lately and I see a general "weakness" in him physically. In every other way, he seems his normal self. The vet said I could always bring him in for further blood work if concerned. My question is has anyone experienced this and what have they done? Thanks for any advice out there! Ruth |

Lucky--the Quaker Parrot
Ruth, My opinion is that you need to bring him in to the vet and get some tests run. It's better to be safe than sorry. Quakers don't weigh much and don't have a lot of reserves to rely upon if they get sick. He may just be a bit anemic or something simple like that. What food does he eat? Does he get vitamins through a source other than his food? It could just be a little deficiency somewhere in his diet. Good Luck and let us know how the little guy is doing!
