Unhappy New Bird Lover in Wisconsin

Hello everyone..

My name is Mary and I live in Oshkosh, WI with my two children and pets. I have been divorced twice and decided no more! I am happy with my children and pets.

I currently have a Bassett Hound named Brewster, a bunny named Missy, 2 parakeets named Cheeks and Harley, and 2 Cockatiels named Kisses and Snuggles. They all bring so much fun into our household.

We did have an Awesome Quaker Parrot named Kiwi. I attended a show here in town with my children last year. My son has wanted a Quaker for a long time, and it ended up a breeder was selling Kiwi, who was her pet.

We decided to buy him and give him a great home. He was such a character. The reason I am using past tense is because he ended up leaving us this past weekend.
Actually, it is a very sad story. We ended up rescuing a sweet dog that was neglected and we think beaten, a cocker spaniel. She was picked up Sat and we took her in. She was coming out of her shell slowly, but even in the short time, it was amazing how she needed some love.
Well after bringing her home, we decided to get more food. We all left, put up the gate between two rooms, and on our way we went. When we returned, we found the gate down, and much to our horror, there was Kiwi, on the floor dead and mauled. His poor green feather were all off his little body. IT WAS DEVASTATING! We all miss him dearly and it sure is quiet without him.
So here is a note to my loving Kiwi, rest in peace Buddy. We miss you!

Hi Mary, I'm really sorry to hear about the loss of Kiwi. Was he in a locked cage when you left to go get food? It sounds like the cocker may need to be crated when you're away from the house as well. We don't want her getting to the other fids.

Welcome to the group.

Welcome to the group.

Thanks for the welcome! Well, he was not crated, and we no longer have the dog.
Now we are trying to decide if we should get a blue quaker, or a type of conure. I am not sure yet. I put a deposit on the quaker, but I am so undecided! There are too many cool birds to choose from. I already own 3 cockatiels and I am going to sell my 2 parakeets.

Mary, I hope you can find a good bird. Here in Pennsylvania, we aren't able to keep Quackers, it's illegal. So, unless I move, I'll never know the joy.

Well, you never know. Maybe one day I can photograph and record him for you! Thanks for the kind words!

Sorry to hear about the Quaker.

Why are you selling the parakeets?
