I lost Kirby last night

Kirby and Cloe are two Australian King parrots I bought from a local parrot farm 6 years ago. They were about 6 months old when I got them. Kirby was such a little character very loving kissed me anytime I wanted and had a such a sweet tough guy thing going on.

In the summer here at the beach it's nice out though I didn't go with my instincts, I didn't bring them inside on some nights. Last night a Raccoon broke about three inch space in their cage. One cage was very sturdy the other not. I had the cages linked together so they could bounce from cage to cage. My bad. Kirby and Cloe were brother and sister and I got them together and they always have been together. This morning Cloe was up early and eating and dinking make little sounds but not like when the two of them would together normally in the morning.

I am waiting to hear from my friend at the farm I got them from as to what to do about Cloe and maybe what to do about another companion for her. She's my little sweetie she is sitting on my shoulder as I type this starting to make her little noises. She seems OK but must somehow be traumatized by what she saw. Kirby was a tough and sweet little guy I know he we after the Raccoon which was not a good idea. I know he went down fighting.

That was my boy. I feel like I failed him by not protecting him that my job to protect them.

Sorry to introduce myself this way.

Ernie, I'm sorry to hear of your loss. I hope you and Cloe can lift each other's spirits. Try not to beat yourself up too much. A lot of people have outside aviaries but nature can be tough. I would have been worried about hawks but I have to say I would never have worried about raccoons so I might easily have done the same thing.

Oh Ernie, I'm so sorry about Kirby! Raccoons can be persistant, tenacious critters, not easily deterred by anything. I lost 13 of my 15 laying hens last fall to one (we caught him in the act of trying to get in the coop one night), but no matter what we did, he still managed to decimate my girls. You can't blame yourself for this, so please don't....there was no way of knowing that something like that would happen, and now you need to be there for cloe.
My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Meredith

Thank you everyone.

Cloe and I are spending lots of time together. she's eating and seems OK. But yesterday she slept a lot but did stayed up on my shoulder last night very late while I watched TV and did her flying around the house as normal. This morning she's eating and seems fine.

I'm wondering if another companion is a good idea or not. I sure miss my little boy though he was so cool. I remember a poem about where birds go after they pass then are re-united when I pass on I just can't remember it.

thank you again.
