Pit Stop Aviary

Awesome site. I know very little bout birds. This however does not deter my friends from bringing me every lost, discarded or unwanted bird they find. I built an aviary in my backyard as a "pit-stop" while running lost/found ads or supplying "medical aid" for said birds because i can not handle seeing them in small cages. Some birds I can set free once reared or healed, others have to stay. I now have a very mixed aviary (parakeets, lovebirds, budgies, finches, quails, chat, streakheaded canary, doves) with new additions (due to breeding) on a fairly regular basis. I still know squat bout birds, but at least now i can get advise here instead of spending hours going through webpages.

I live next to a kloof and feed the wild birds daily. Mainly weavers, white eyes, bulbuls, hadedas, queleas, sparrows, canaries, olive thrusts, sunbirds, cape robins (comes into my kitchen when i'm late with cheese), wagtails, starlings, fiscal shrikes, whydahs, bishops, doves etc... your common garden variety. I put out a variety of seeds, bread, cheese, egg and shells, fruit, scraps from table and sugar water. Sometimes i have something more "exotic" pay me a visit like kingfisher, burchell coucal, owl etc. I have fruit bats visiting my banana trees at night and two plovers and a dikkop that wait at my gate every evening at 6 for cheese.

Besides the birds i share the house/garden with a hubby, 2 teenagers, 3 dogs, 2 hamsters and 5 snakes.

Anyway, a lot of babbling when all i really wanted to say was glad i found this site. Just reading through some of the threads answered questions i had.

Welcome!! I too would love to see pictures. I wish we could do something like that but we live in the country and we already lost four chickens last year to owls, coyotes, and/or foxes so I will not take the chance but it would still be nice!

You are doing amazing work. Somehow, just through your experiences, I believe you could probably teach us a few things too.
