Hello Treespirit!! Welcome to BB. You're doing the right thing by coming here to learn about birds. This is the best place on the net. You will learn lots!!! What type of bird do you think you would like? I can't wait to hear more about you and your journey.

Thanks so much for the kind welcome. ^_^ I'm not exactly sure what kind of bird I would want at the moment. I guess I would have to rule out cockatoos(I've heard they're not good as a first, as sweet and playful as they are), and I think I'd also have to rule out macaws because I don't think I'd like to start with such large beaks. ^_~ I guess I was thinking more along the lines of an african grey, amazon, or eclectus. I know I should probably start even smaller then that, but for some reason those types of birds don't speak to me. But really, I think I'd go more by personality. I'd want to meet the bird first, get to know it, and see if our personalities go well together. Haha, that sounds silly, but that's how I will be able to feel it out.
As I said, I'm glad to be a member here now. I hope it will be a great resource for learning much about having a pet bird. Glad I found ya. <thumbs up> |

I don't think it's that bad of an idea to start out with one of the 3 that you have listed. Just make sure to do LOTS of research before getting your bird. I think you know that though. I (personally) would lean toward a Grey or Ekkie, but that's just me. See if there's a breeder or bird store near where you live. That way, you can visit and meet with different types of birds and see which species is best for you. You never know, you might fall in love with a macaw!! :-) Good luck!!

Thanks so much for the feedback. I am leaning towards a grey, myself. For some reason my gut feeling says an african grey also. ^_^ How do you feel about adopting from a previous owner?
I certainly wouldn't doubt that I'd fall in love with a macaw. There's a pet store I visit(just to see the birds: and umbrella cockatoo, a macaw, and some other birds....I don't buy anything from there, because I don't think it's very nice of them to keep the birds there, nor do they seem very taken care of), and I've already fallen in love with the cockatoo and macaw there. They certainly are very sweet. Well, over the weekend I bought a book on care and training of birds. So, I can now feel a bit more confident. I would love to one day be able to work with birds(and/or other animals). Well, that's one of my dreams. ^_^ |

I personally see nothing wrong with adopting a Grey from a previous owner. There are several members of the group here that have adopted wonderfully, loving Greys. Just be sure to do ALL THE RESEARCH you can before bring one home (baby or adopted). So many people get a Grey for all the wrong reasons. Those are usually the ones that end up being put up for adoption. Check in your area to see if there are any Greys that need adopting.
