That IS a big surprise! The free-market capitalist in me says you should open one. Though it sounds like getting pets to sell might be an obstacle.

I guess. might be a serious offense too if the pets are illegally shipped...don't know much about shipping pets (laws and stuff of Nepal) but its a great idea..this city certainly has some serious pet lovers but no good facilities. I would love to open one..let me check on the net for ideas.

Anpas, would you mind posting a bit more about yourself? I'd also like to hear how you got your first bird. Life in Nepal is very interesting to me, to say the least!

hi..yes life in Kathmandu (capital city) rather than in Nepal is very interesting. Got my first birds way back in 1997 (budgies) from some street bird sellers that were abundant in the streets of the city then. Had a big outdoor cage...but then after the bird flu hit the asian countries we had to let them go to the zoos. Then had an alexandrine (Nicky)which was doing well untill it fell ill with parrot flu and died since its next to impossible to get an avian vet here..then got (Whoopie) my sweet heart from a cousins place and when I am still learning about keeping birds as pets...she dies on me..boo hoo..and now no birds just memories. Kathmandu is a cool city...and I am a pre - school teacher. I see that you are a camper..well you should try Nepal for treks and camps...dunno when I will get another bird..maybe never..but the hope still remains.

Welcome Anpas! I have been to Kathmandu a few times, also to Bhutan, Tibet and India. I'm the resident world traveller who only got my first bird in 2000. I am sorry about Whoopie. I wouldn't have expected to find avian vets there unless they are attached to a zoo or something. There are a few people on here with a vast experience in bird keeping and some medical procedures but none are actual avian vets. But they are always willing to help out, especially for someone in your position who can't just go to an avian vet. If you do get another bird and need help, please either PM me or post in Ask the Experts. Maybe if you go to India or even the Terai region you can find another bird, but please buy a domestic bred bird, don't just catch one in the wild.

Camping in Nepal? That would ROCK! It's hard enough for me to find the time just to go to Minnesota/Canada, however, so Nepal may have to wait...until I retire.

Sounds like you really love birds, are there zoos in Kathmandu? If so, maybe they could help you find a new pet?

wow great to know that you know this side of the world. My husband leads motorcycle tours to tibet and various treks to all places...he too has been to bhutan. Thanks for your offer to help..the next time I get a bird. It probably would be very difficult to get one here now especially a home bred one...but I will still keep my quest for one strong.

hello again..guess what ..I got another bird..when you wish very hard ..it does come true, I got this by sure fluke...my friend could not keep it (she got it in Jan) and so she passed it on to me..she named it Pepeto. The problem is that it looks older than the one that we had before. It is an indian ringneck and it already sports a red ring and half a black one. Do you think its going to be difficult to bond with it?. It is very nervous and becomes very agitated when we get near the cage..what am I to do now?

Let Pepeto settle down for a few days since he is very nervous about his new surroundings. It may be harder to bond with him though I'm sure in time he'll come around.
