Am a serious bird lover

HI I live in Kathmandu Nepal and I am a very new member of the board. The forum has helped to ease the pain of loosing a very close and dear baby. I had an Indian Ringneck Parakeet who stole all our hearts away. She died just eleven months after we brought her home (she must have been about 3 months old then) and we have been very very very sad since. It is very difficult to get a good bird here since we do not have any legal bird breeders or aviaries. Although the pain of loosing my beloved bird is still very heart breaking and although it is next to impossible to get another bird to replace my little "Whoopie" who had a personality that made us love her more, I look forward to having another little baby birdie in the future. I do hope that I will get one in the future.

Nepal? Wow! That's very interesting! Welcome Anpas, I'm looking forward to hearing about your quest for a new feathered friend, and hopefully learning something of Nepal in the process.

Sorry to hear about Whoopie.

Hi..great to hear from you. It always feels good to talk to people who know how much we love our pets. My friends thought I was crazy, especially since most people in Kathmandu would never have a bird walking up and down thier staircase..for them a bird is always meant to be in a tiny little cage..sometimes in the heat for hours and hours where children taunt and tease them. It is sad but true. My heart goes out to some of the ones that I have seen here and I try to talk to the owners but they turn a deaf ear. Anyway I do hope that someday I will be able to make some changes here. You know like begin a special vetenary clinic etc. The other animals too suffer equally due to the lack of such clinics.
Thnks again. Talk to you soon.

Monica ... break out the spandex, this sounds like a case for ... Super Bird Girl!

PS. Anpas, Monica is a member who has worked wonders in helping educate less-skilled bird owners in her own neighborhood.

LOL Crebain!

Anpas and I have been talking for some time, as I have tried to help Anpas figure out why their last fid had passed on, so in future hopes of them being able to have a fid of their own and knowing this bird will be safe. They took excellent care of their ringneck when the little one was still around, and they still cherish the ringneck. They truelly are bird lovers, though a sad thing that they are in an area which does not understand the true meaning of a bird relationship and what extensive care that must be taken to care for such a small creature.

great to share good things with bird lovers. As you know I live in Kathmandu Nepal where a law was passed against bird sellers/poachers recently....which was quite a good thing for many of us since the poor birds were kept in very poor conditions. tiny cages, ill fed, and sometimes sprayed with paint to keep them looking good for the ignorant buyers. There were a few legal vendors who had licenses to ship birds from neighbouring India but they too got greedy since ringnecks are abundant in the terai plains of Nepal. They would rather go and get them from the nests of the wild bird than to breed them in an avairy. I was in contact with one such vendor who showed me his license but I guess he too became overcome with greed. I went to visit the bird shop or rather hole last evening and its totally abandoned. When I asked around, they said that the police raided the area a couple of months ago and freed all the birds. I was shocked...freed?? where??? the poor little ones had no survival skills and no where to go. It would have been better if they had given them over to the avairy at the zoo (which is quite a good one). I cried when I got home thinking of all the tiny little birds out in the wild and somehow I felt glad that my Whoopie at least had a home where she was loved and cared for. Please let me know if anybody has plans to visit this part of the world...we could probably arrange a birdtalk/educational session here.

Sprayed with paint? Ugh! Sounds like you're going to have a hard time finding a good source for your new birdie.

Is travel to India a possibility?

it is possible but not much time and the laws are quite strict. I don't think we would be able to get one across by land or air....but I will still try. There are some people who rescue the birds from these poachers and look for proper homes for them...although very rare...but I am determined.

I have no concept of how things work in Kathmandu, but a city of 700,000 must have pet shops ... right?
