Exclamation Greetings and -SQUAK!- from Rhode Island

Hey everyone! My name is Brittany Miller and i'm from Wakefield, RI. I am 18 years old and i have been involved with working with birds, exotic and wild all my life. As a senior lifeguard on the beaches of rhode island, during my shift i am also a life guard for the local wild birds, that get injured often on the beaches by pollution or fishermen. In the winter I work at a local pet store and i have ben visiting them for many years now to socialize their large and small parrots. Unfortunately, I just missed out on an absolutely gorgeous 4-5 month old female citron crested cockatoo, and just recently, after she had already been sold, my parents agreed to let me keep one at home. However I have found one for sale in Maine, but it is difficult for me to go to pick it up at the moment. I perfer to find a 4-5 month old male or female citron crested, so i can finish up with the weaning and bond with it myself. I know how to care for a large bird like such, and many have called me a natural, I spend alot of time with the soicial birds that i care for, like when i am at the pet store i work while exposing the birds to new things gradually and playing with them every free moment i get when they aren't eating or resting. I am incredibly excited and enthusiastic about the permission i have been granted to keep one, but i am having trouble finding a cockatoo at a reasonable price where i can actually pick it up. The one in Maine is $600 and i am just thrilled at hearing one for sale for so cheap, it is possible to get it, but i hate putting the bird through so much stress through so long of a drive. So if anyone out there in Rhode island or close in the neighboring states thinks that they can help me out or give me a heads up, i would most obliged. Thanks alot everyone!

Welcome Saiya, and good luck finding a 'too. Take your time, and one will come along. They live a looong time, so there's no need to hurry, eh?

Car travel doesn't seem to bother birds as much as you may think, so I wouldn't balk at buying an out-of-state bird.

"Saiyajin" ... I'm guessing that's a Japanese word for some kind of person? Am I right?

Crebain, yes. Saiyajin, in the form that I know it, is derived from the Japanese Anime called Dragon Ball, or well the sagas of Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and Dragon Ball GT.

Brittany Miller? Interesting name as I know of a little girl, maybe around 12 years old, with the same exact name, however Miller isn't her real last name, but rather the name of her cousins and aunt that she lives with.

Anyway, welcome to BirdBoard! I'll have to agree, the trip really isn't that bad. Birds travel by car, truck, van, and even airplanes quite frequently. The airplanes may be most disturbing with the change of airpressure though many are able to cope with the travel quite well. If he is still available, and you are really interested in him, I'd say go for it! Otherwise, keep your eye out for another bird that you'd trully be interested in.

Talking

thanks for all of your responses i enjoyed reading them alot!
^_^ Anyways, i'm glad that you all tend to agree that traveling with a cockatoo isn't all that bad, and that they donp't get too stressed out by it, that makes me feel alot better and less guilty! whew... but yeah, Saiya means strong of powerfull in Japanese and jin means people, people from earth are called Chikkiyu-jins obviously meaning earth people, but yeah, you were right! Kudos to you, you knew that it came from Dragonball Z. I love that show alot because of the heart of the storyline and i like talking about the different cultures Akira Toriyama created, it's alot of fun. Anyways, i'm hoping to see a response from them to see if he is stil available. Thanks again!

I love the show as well as some of the other animes, though the animes come on around 12am here and we no longer have cartoon network. It's all fine though as I hardly watch tv to begin with, even if I do miss the shows!

Do you have your heart set on a 'too in general? Or is it just this bird? I've heard 'toos can be challenging ... maybe not the best for a first bird?

Hi Brittany I have an Elenora too which is related to the Lesser Sulfur and is a handfull. He is a wonderful bird but has his days. JMO A too is a tough bird to have as a first bird. As they age and get set in their ways they can be a pitbull with wings. My bird will cuddle, dance, talk, one minute and the next minute i'm putting band aids on my fingers. The is a Too Board on the net you might check out if you haven't already. PM me and i can give it to you. If you get one i wish you luck.

Unhappy

yes i have experience with large parrots and a citron cockatoo at the pet store i work at, i have had smaller birds before and after several years of handling larger parrots and conures, i have decided that i have waited long enough and that i crave a cockatoo companion, i seem to interact really well with them and i am more than prepared for the challange and companionship. I am looking for a baby Citron, but if that is not available, which it is not at the moment for reasonable price, i wil be more than happy with a lesser sulfur , triton, Eleanora, greater sulfur, or even an umbrealla. I am ready, but i want a cheap baby really bad, and i am looking in an area close to RI so we can just drive their and the states around us to pick them up. I'm almost desperate because i'm getting really depressed in not being able to find anything close affordable and young. Kudos to whoever bought mr. Bebe... lol *ish saddened, drops head* LOL yeah i hope i find something soon, i am ready. ^_^ Thanks for all your wonderfull posts though.

Brittany There is a rescue here in Ma. called Foster Parrots that has many toos up for adoption. They do not charge but you have to spend time there to bond with the bird. Last time i was there they had to have 20 or 25 of all types.
