Hello from Washington State Capital

I currently live in olympia, WA and am a new bird owner. Me and my boyfriend purchased a 5 yrold Quaker, Sammi, who I found on craigslist, and boy did we not know what we were getting into! :) He had some serious trust issues, and attacked me the first night. I was not a happy camper. Being a dog, and horse person, I had no idea how to handle this. And on top of that..my boyfriend was the only person who could touch him. I sat by his cage for the next month straight everyday for about an hour and talked and sang to him..Eventually he came around, and so did I..He is now my bird, and only my bird :) We aren't sure of the situation he came from, but were glad we got him out of there..He is super happy now, and SOOOOOO spoiled..I could spend my whole paycheck on toys for him. Since getting him we have gotten 2 more birds..Another quaker Irwin, who loves to talk while im vacumning, and a pineapple green cheek conure that we named velcro..Oh..cant forget the cat, Sprocket :) Were one big happy disfunctional family but its great.

Welcome from a fellow Washingtonian! I'm a newcomer to the board as well but am also a relative newcomer to Washington State. So far, I've been enjoying the board; I'm sure you'll get lots of useful info.

How wonderful!
You did the right thing, make sure he still bonds with your boyfriend too as much as its great you two are best friends, but your bird could become aggressive towards him when he's around you out of jealously. :)

You've come to the right place if there's any advice needed about anything.
Have fun.

Oh and post pictures!

Welcome to Birdboard cowgirl! I'm also from Washington State, Port Angeles are, in the Olympic Peninsula.

It's wonderful to hear that you had so much patience with your baby, and that you and your baby/babies, lol, are doing so well. Oh yes, I can relate.... I have storage containers full of bird stuff I switch out.

Welcome again!

For someone without a background with parrots you seem to instinctively know the right thing to do. I am glad it is going so well...now. I hope one of the guys has taken to your boyfriend.

Welcome.

lol..both his birds are very social and anyone can hold them. I just think my bird came from a home where he was kept in his cage and just teased and yelled at, as the only word he says is a bad one..and he is 5. Over the weeked we had a little emergency. Our green cheek flew to one of the quaker's cage, and about got his toe bit off. Happened about 9pm on a friday..and there is no 24 hr vets here for birds..Cornstarched it, put him in his small travel cage, and let him rest. HE is doing alright, but doesn't seem to be gripping with that foot when I hold him. I imagine he will be sore for awhile.
