new to bird keeping

Hello,

We are in the process of getting our first big bird as both my husband bucky and I have had previous experience with birds, his was a sun conure and mine was a cockatiel

We live in Citrus County, Florida. So anyone local to us hello there especially )

We are looking at getting an Eclectus parrot as we want a family bond as opposed to a one person bird we have yet to actually narrow down the specific sub species due to conflicting information on which one is the best to get atm we are lookin at getting a red side. Does anyone have any experience with multiple subspecies of Eclectus that would be willin to share their experiences?

Also I was wondering about the adoption of a bird that has been turned in by a previous owner ~ not the real problematic ones but just like the ones that the owner did not have the time to care for it. We currently know of a red side that needs a forever home. obviously we are goin to actually visit the bird a few times to get a feel for how it behaves and such but is there a reason to not get a 5 yr old bird. I mean if it does not talk alot will it if it is happy here? and will it exhibit bad behavior in a number of visits (i mean bad habits ~ cant these be broken??) I mean how set does a bird get in it's ways? do they change when circumstances get better or do they remember bein neglected forever?

Thanks in advance

Welcome! I think that it is great that you want to rehome a bird. Eclectus are supposed to be great. As for talking, some birds talk up a storm and others never say a word. It dose not mean that the bird is unhappy or does not like you. I am sure that others will have more input.

Eclectus are wonderful birds. I love my guy. The most experience I have had has been with him (a red sided) and a female solomon island. Each bird is different. Echo is an absolute sweetheart but I know someone else with a male red sided eclectus that she can barely handle. She's had to get stitches more than once.
I think if your family and this bird get along, then you should be fine. Go meet him; see what he thinks of you. If he is receptive of you, then that's what matters.
I've never met a male eclectus that I didn't get along with. They tend to respond well to me. I think they know I'm a sucker for them. Getting a baby is no guarantee that s/he will be perfect either.
A lot of people say that the solomon island males make the best companions but most people say that the red sided males are very similar. I've only met a couple vos marie (sp) males but they seemed sweet too.
If a male of any subspecies showed up at my door one day, I'd be thrilled. I think they are great. I'm rather biased though.
Good luck!

At the risk of sounding wishy washy we are no longer considering just an eclectus as our newest addition to our so far featherless flock, but it is better than getting a bird then changing our minds lol.

We have basically opened our minds a bit more if you will. After much research feedback and speaking to and reading posts we are not limiting ourselves to any particular breed ~ we have a few that include the eclectus and macaws so now that when we meet our new bird we will know :)) I can see this is goin to become and addiction lol maybe in a few years we will have two birds. Thank you all again for the input and stories they have really helped us a lot with seeing that stereotyping birds is as bad as stereotyping anything else :))
