Saying Hi!

I joined the list awhile ago and feel bad for just now getting around to introducing myself. I joined because I was planning at adding a parrot to my life at some point in the near future. With finishing up school and having to seat for a national certification exam, I figured I would begin looking in earnest in the fall, but that I would keep my eyes open. I really wanted to adopt rather than buy so I have been checking Petfinder and Craigs List pretty much everyday.

Two weeks ago I was checking the birds on petfinder when i saw a shelter about an hour away had gotten a parrot in. They had him listed as a conure, but the white skin around the eyes told me he was a Hahns. I was there when the shelter opened the next morning and Suerto (formerly known as Bobo) came home with me.

He is a nice bird, a little nippy at times. That gives us something to work on along with the screaming. He has feather plucked all the feathers on his body. Unfortunately, they had no history on him so I don't know if this is a long time thing. He does have a few new feathers coming in that he is not bothering so I have my fingers crossed that some more come in. It looks like he may have been on an all seed diet, so I am offering him some different veggies and adding in some pellets.

I've been learning so much from the board so I am glad to join the rank of parrent.

Dawn & Suerto- Hahns Macaw

Welcome Dawn and Suerto! Have you taken him to an avian vet to rule out any medical reasons for his plucking? It can be a wide range of issues that caused it. Even if all his feathers do not regrow, he'll still be a great companion. Naked birdies need loving too!!! I'm glad you found him and he found you. Sometimes, it's just meant to be. Feel free to share pictures with us.
