Question Hi I'm new

Hi all.

My name lorraine and very soon I'll be getting a red rump for a pet.

I need to know is there many members on here that owns red rumps as pets as I need to know what their behavoour in and out of its cage as I had never owned one.

I went to a friend of my hubby and fell in love with a red rump which at the time the female had 5 chicks, I will bring one home very shortly.

So I need as much info as possible about how to keep them please.

Thanks Lorraine

Hi Lorraine and welcome to the forum.

Most of the info on red rumps is in the grass parakeets section, I think you've found that area already. I haven't had them so I'm not alot of help with advice on them.

I had a flick through on the redrump section and it's dosen't really tell me about the health of the bird. What I mean is what to look for if the your bird is sick. I know the basics in looking after them like the seed, fruit and veg they eat. I know they all forage on the floor alot looking for the grass seeds that's how they get there name from.

Hi lozzy, welcome! I've never even *heard* of a red rump! But I know some basics for what to look for to make sure any bird is healthy...

First and foremost: Regular vet checks. Your vet is most likely better at spotting things than you.

Second, make sure that the eyes are clear and bright, that the feathers are smooth and shiny and in good condition, and that your bird seems alert and active.

Thirdly, moniter to make sure that your bird is remaining at the approx weight range recommended by your vet for each bird.

Fourth, keep an eye on the food and water and make sure it is disappearing at a consistent rate and that that is a good amount for them to be eating.

Fifth, watch out for behaviour changes. They can happen, like with any human, because the bird wanted a change or it could signify a medical problem. Or could just be molting or breeding season.

Hope that helps, and I bet the people on the parakeet board on this site will know more than me! :) WELCOME!

Sorry! I forgot to add -- birds should not have discharge coming from their nares (nostrils) but sneezing is fine if it's just the sound. That's normal for birds.
