Newbie Alert!
Hello all!
My name is Roxy and I'm a dog trainer in upstate New York. I have three gorgeous and wonderful Rough Collies and one sweet and loving German Shepherd. Mason, Dixie and Faith are the Collies and Dakota is my GSD. I also have one cat. My hubby and I are currently looking to add a bird to our home. It's still up in the air as to what we'll end up with but we're leaning towards a few different types. My dream birds include the Hawk Head, Black Lory and Greater Vasa. We're looking more at a Pionus or a Poisephalus. We'll see, I suppose. I've had several birds in the past including budgies, lovies and a Green Cheek Conure. We're definitely steering clear of Conures this time as much as I love them. My hubby is a bit worried about excessive noise and the bird becoming a one person bird. He's a trucker and isn't home often. He doesn't need the bird to bond with him so much as tolerate him handling it if necessary. He'd like the bird to be able to be out on it's playstand when I'm at work and he is home without being attacked when the time comes to put it away. Granted, we realize that's not something predictable but we're trying to narrow our search down to birds that are less likely to be overly... eh, moody. Part of our problem is that we're hundreds of miles from family and with him on the road during the week, I'm all alone. I'm a bird person and he just likes them. My GCC kept me company while he was gone and was a great companion for me. Without her here, it just isn't the same. Here is my crew. They are a great bunch and I love them to death. Dixie was a private rescue. She had a severe case of demodex mites and needed months and months of treatment. Mason was a similar case though his mites were rather minor. Faith is a breeder reject. The breeder had planned on breeding her and then changed her mind, thankfully, as Faithey would have been in an outdoor kennel her entire life. Kodie is our rescue GSD girl. She was a foster failure, as were Dixie and Mason. Cat was a barn cat that we brought home for $15 one day. He's not a rescue but he's spoiled rotten. My hubby named him, lol. The question mark, of course, is because I have no idea what bird I'll end up with.

Your dogs are beautiful! I don't know much about the Hawkheads but have heard they aren't as easy to handle as many of the other parrots. So many parrots can be one person birds, and it's very hard to predict what one will do especially with your husband gone frequently. Have you looked into the usual temperaments of the species you're considering? Good luck in your search!

We welcome you to the forum. Very good thing doing some reading before deciding on your FID. You found the best place on the net to learn and get advise from some real bird nuts like us While I don't have any experience with any of the birds you are looking at many here do and will be sure to give you some help in making your decision. Looking forward to getting to know you.
