Hi, i just joined the forum. I love birds. I have 2 goffin
cockatoos and 4 cockatiels. I am looking for a new cage for my goffins. The feathers and dander is all over the house all the time and the daily cleanup of seed is alot of work. One member referred acrylicbirdcages.com . It had great mess free cages but unfortunately the owner passed away and the company is out of business. Any suggestions on a "mess free" cage? |

Another site that I found was Bird Cages.

I am not sure about "mess free" cages but I do have two suggestions. First, with birds that are known for their dander like cockatoos, cockatiels, african greys, etc. you should use an air filter. This will cut down on the dander floating through the air. Second, you could get a cage with a seed skirt. This will help to catch some of the seed and funnel it down into the cage's tray.

I don't care for the acrylic cages myself. I personally don't think that they allow the bird proper climbing room, or air flow. but again this is my 2 cents worth

I tend to agree about the lack of climbing areas on those cages. Another thing is the dust, we currently have a piece of plexi on a divder in a duoble macaw cage seperating two Too's, trust me when I say it is always dust covered to the extreme. In a couple of days it looks fogged! LOL!
The downside to owning birds is a mess, I am a neat freak, it used to drive me nuts, 7 years later it is just part of life LOL! I guess I just tailor my life for theirs instead of them to mine LOL!

Keep the food down on the floor in a corner of the cage, were no droppings land. also, attach hard thin plastic on the sides at the bottom (outside) the cage, about 6" up. This is something I did with my tiels. You can get the plastic at a hardware store.

The only mess-free cage is one without a bird in it. =)

I agree 150% with acrylic cages. To me it is like putting a bird on display like a trophy, I know that is not the case with most bird lovers, but I don't like the looks and it doesn't allow enough climbing room. My zon is all over the cage and he would be limited to perches only while in the cage. Not good since Zons are prone to obesity and he would not get nearly the exercise.

I think part of being a bird is making mess. Shredding, throwing, pooping, feathers everywhere. Just all part of the fun.
I give my guys things to chew up (pine cones, branches with bark, gum leaves) and it makes an awful mess, (birdie made mulch) but they certainly seem to have fun occupying themselves and just being birds. If you haven't go an air filter then I highly recommend getting one. It will help with the dander. The seed mess. Only thing you can do is just stay on top of it or get some fabric to go around the cage at the height of the dishes. That may cut down some of it. I'm not a real clean freak so I can live with the mess my lot make. BTW.... Welcome to BB.
