New from NW Ontario :)

Hey everyone, I found this board while doing some research on PDD. I recently was advised to have my bird put down by the vet I was seeing. I did because I had no information about what else could be done.

I had a 2.5 year old cockatiel named Princess Tatyana, who was laid to rest in my flower garden immediately after leaving the vet office. I wasn't informed of getting a autopsy done after she was put down. So I had no way to know if she really had PDD.

I have some further questions about what my options are after wards, what to do with her environment. I wish to get another bird but I don't have any information about what I should be doing about the cage? surrounding walls? room? house...

I've been getting mixed messages about what to do and what I can't do and I can't find any valid information after PDD was classified as borno virus.

Sorry for the long post, but wanted to let everyone know where I'm coming from.

Hi,
Welcome. I am sorry for the loss of your precious bird. I just attended a conference and one of the speakers is a leading authority on the latest information on PDD. Her name is Dr. Susan Clubb. Type her name into google scholar and see if you can pull up any of her articles.

It is true that the virus is very difficult in terms of classification. I will see if I have any of the information on her presentation - but google her in the meantime.

As far as cleaning the cages and walls - bleach usually does the trick.

Thank you so much for your speedy reply. I was attacked at another forum for suggesting that I would bleach things down, steam clean the cage and bake the toys.

I was told in a very harsh manner that there was no proven method to rid surfaces of this virus and that I would have to move and buy a new vehicle.

I am googling Susan as we speak.

You're right about harshness...bleach kills even the hardiest of viruses, including parvo for dogs. I see no reason why you couldn't bleach everything...I wouldn't just steam the cage...I would take it apart the best you can and bleach it too. Suggestion: fill the bath tub up with a bleach sol'n and soak everything for a few hours and then drain, rinse over and over, and let it soak in clean water with a fish aquarium dechlorinator (we did this when I worked at a lg pet store chain, and it didn't kill the fish! it neutralizes the chlorine from the bleach). And then let everything dry. As long as you don't have anything porous, the bleach should suffice. I'd suggest tossing out anything cloth, of course. Wooden items, I'm not sure, I bleach my wooden perches, but I've never had a parrot w/ PDD. The bleach doesn't bother my birds, so...personal discretion.

Yeah I would be using a bleach and then the steam cleaner. My bathtub isn't large enough for my cage. I have a 20x40x60 cage.

I really don't know enough about any of this to give advice but I wanted to welcome you to our forum. I'm sorry you got beaten up on another one. Sadly that happens too easily on some of these forums.

I'm sorry to hear about your Princess. It must have been horrible. I hope all the advice points to you being able to get a new bird and soon.

WOW that is QUITE rude of this other forum you speak of. I am shock an appalled! I'm sure you wont find anyone in this forum to be rude, as a matter of fact there is a lot of knowledge on this forum and yes there are some heated debates here but thats usually over food lol Sick around and ask questions someone in here is bound to have the answer to your questions or atleast point you in the right direction!

I am sorry for your loss thats just terrible :( hopefully you are able to figure things out and im sure bleach will kill the bacteria if any is left in your home.
