Hi from PA!

I have posted already here but I wanted to introduce myself formally. I live in Philadelphia (Go Phillies!!) and I've had many birds in the past 10 years. Currently I have a Blue and Gold Macaw and a Hahn's Macaw. They are both rehomes that we adopted about a month ago. I had in the past a Timneh Grey, Amazon and Indian Ringneck. Unfortunately my Timneh passed away suddenly, we think a heart attack, when he was only 4 years old. We hand raised him from a baby. The Amazon and Indian ringneck were a rehome that we took in after our grey died. They were a bonded pair and unfortunately the ringneck passed away shortly after we got him and the amazon was devestated. He went into breakdown mode afterwards and squawked like mad all day, every day. Since we did not know at the time how to deal with it we gave him to a rescue. He wasn't able to be handled. We felt so bad for him but didn't know what to do. This was about 10 years ago.

When we decided to get into birds again, I researched and read alot about the different types of birds to see what was our best fit. We did not want a bonded pair again this time for obvious reasons. We have three small children so we wanted a bird that was good with a family and we wanted one large and one small. So we decided on the Blue and Gold and the Hahns. I will say, the Hahn's is a handful. He was cage territorial when we first got him. He DID NOT want to come out of his cage. I spent alot of time with him, talking to him and gaining his trust. I couldn't pick him up at all without him biting so I made a T perch to get him to step up. He is doing great now. He comes out of his cage freely, loves being at his playstand all day and he steps up well on the perch. We are still working on stepping up on a finger. Slowly but surely!

I homeschool my three boys so we are home all day with the birds. They are out of their cage from the time we wake up and until we put them to bed at night. They seem to love the interaction and I am hoping we have given them a better life then they had previously. The Blue and Gold thinks I am his mate. He loves me :). Working on the dominence issue with him.

I hope to read alot about everyone else and learn from the seasoned "birdies" here.

Welcome to birdboard! Gotta love those little birds who think they run the world....maybe they do. They sure know how to control their human pets.

Hi & welcome!! Congrats on taking in rehomes, it takes a big person to do that as many of them DO come with behavioral issues. I love rehomes I think they are a challenge but the rewards are amazing. Plus its always nice knowing what a great home you've given them

Your flock sounds amazing!! Im looking into getting a little Hahn's myself, also a rehome - but its proven kind of a difficult process thus far!! Id love to see pictures of your flock, they sound great
