Hello from San Diego, CA..

Hello all...
I am looking to own a bird, but I need advice on choosing a species. So here are the living conditions I guess lol, I have 3 children ( 10, 5 & 3) not sure if some birds are better with kids then others. I live in a house and have made room for a large cage if I decide to get a large bird, I work 9am-6pm my husband work 3pm-11pm so the bird would not be home alone very much but I am looking for a bird that is playful, not extremely needy or noisy. Please any advice is greatly appreciated.

Hi & welcome!! I would recommend a cockatiel or a GCC as a first bird. They are known to be pretty playful and like attention but they are very minimally loud. I know others can chime in on that.

Just a side note since I see you are in San Diego - Have you seen Paranormal Activity? I did, I hated it but I guess I just wasn't spooked. I know that the movie was filmed there so is BIG NEWS in SD - just wondering your opinion!! = )

A GCC is a Green Cheek Conure.

Welcome! I was in your place about 2 months ago. Do tons of research!

I am getting mine in 2 weeks from a breeder in San Diego. If you want her info, I will gladly give it to you. She is super nice, and she has many other species to choose from.

If you search through my topics, you will see one called "Research: My Findings" or something around there...it will give you all of the info that I found...it might help you. :)

WOW..... Thank you so very much Dusty, I really like everything you have found out about GCC's. If you could please provide the breeders info that you have that would be great. Hopefully me and the kids can make a visit.

If you want to meet a green cheek Kitsune and I live near Carmel Valley. :) We could take a trip to a park or something so you can see one up close. Kit is 4 months old and learning to grow up.

While GCC's aren't known to be "loud" they could be considered noisy... Kit "talks" a lot in her own little language. It doesn't bother me at all, but if someone is trying to sleep during the day it might get annoying. I'll try to post a video of her "talking" later tonight to photobucket so you can hear them.

Your very welcome.

But, there are a ton of other species out there! Those listed were just the ones that I thought would fit my lifestyle. :)

Make sure you do a ton of research! I was constantly reading up on everything I could find about each species I was considering before I finally found the one I prefered.

The breeder is EMR Exotic Birds This is her website and her name is Eva. Right now, she has some older GCCs (mine is 7 months) and they arent quiet hand tamed. But she is a great breeder and has a TON of different birds to choose from. All of which are well taken care of.

Let us know what you end up doing!
