Hello from Georgia!
Hello all!
I just "inherited" Bird from my best friend that died recently from cancer. She and I have been the best of friends for over 34 years. I spent the last 3 1/2 mths. in Tenn. taking her to chemo and radiation, basically, just giving her as much love and care as I could. Her husband bought her Bird (B&G Macaw) 17 years ago. When she saw how well Bird and I got along she asked if I would like to have him. He truly has taken to me pretty well, thank goodness! He does have his moments of letting me know he's here!! I'm so proud of the way he has handled all the changes, the transport from Tenn. to Ga., being around my dog (1/2 yellow lab and 1/2 stumpy tail cowdog!), my husband, my grandbaby, etc. I take him out of his cage every day for a while and he does enjoy getting out. (we've showered together several times!) I do put my dog up when I take Bird out, just in case. My dog is only 3 yrs and has a lot of puppy in him. I thought it best to have husband here before I try that! From reading other entries in this forum, this sounds like the place for me! Everyone seems to be quite friendly, knowledgeable and willing to help out. I have tons of questions, but that will be for another time! Oh! I do love Bird, and he is a constant reminder of my best friend, he says her name at least five times a day! He is truly a beautiful Macaw, is quite intelligent and great company. I'm sure we will spend many years together. Thank you all and I look forward to hearing from you! Kathleen, a/k/a "itsmamie" |

First of all, I am so sorry about your best friend that must have been hard for you to go through. I think you must be a great person for taking on her bird for her, who she obviously loved. It's great that you get along too!
Secondly, welcome to Birdboard! We're happy to answer any questions you might have whenever you're ready to ask them. There is a section especially for macaws if you have macaw-specific queries. I hope you enjoy it here, there are some compassionate and very knowledgeable people who frequent this site :) ~Mel

Aloha Kathleen!
We are so sorry to hear about the loss of your friend. At least she knew that the bird was going to well cared for. I think the bird choosing you holds true here. The bird felt comfortable with you and probably knew what you meant to your friend (it is strangely amazing how they know this) but they do! I think it is great that the macaw is very comfortable with you. It is evident if he is talking in his new surroundings already. Macaws are extremely intelligent and very sociable. You were the chosen one and you will have a long and fruitful relationship. Just remember, patience is the key. But it sounds like you are off to a great start! |
