Hola y Saludos
Hola from the Central Highlands of Mexico and more specifically Churintzio, Michoacan which depending on ones perspective is either in the middle of nowhere or is in the middle of everything.
Training us on a daily basis are the avian members of the cacophonous and raucous Churintzio Symphony which is comprised of the following pretty much non-stop vocalizing sentient feathered ones- Payno, a half-Moon Conure Rojee el Bandido, a male northern Cardinal Juanee, Fonzi, Luti, and Rillo, male Parakeets Mango and Peppy, Peach-Faced Lovebirds who are the proud and protective parents of 3 babies less than two weeks old, Mappy, Pema, and Yaya. Part of their enthralled audience (not to mention the unenthralled neighbors within a two block radius) are Brinkee, the rabbit and Ebby, the dog that adopted us who listens to the symphony out of harms way. Oh yes, their also is myself and my kinder than kind wife, Maria. In addition, our "family" includes although they will never be joining us at our humble adobe abode are all of the wonderous "wild" birds that inhabit our area that we are fortunate enough to visit with on a daily basis. Hola Les!
You have a cardinal! How did you get a cardinal? Wow! I found a young one by some bushes one day. I picked it up and thought it was cute and helpless. That little guy grabbed the skin on the palm of my hand and wouldn't let go. I put him right back. Within a few seconds he flew back in the bushes to safety. I am just learning some spanish on my own. Les querer gusta birdboard.com Buena Suerta! |

Hola CGG,
Glad that you asked about Rojee, the only non-parrot in our avian mascota ensemble. Northern Cardinals as mascostas/pets are not that uncommon here and are sold both by roving bird vendors, fixed street vendors, and in the local equivalent of pet shops. We purchased him at around three months old from a woman who typically has about 22 clases/types of birds. With Maria doing the interpreting, we were assured that all of her birds, including Rojee are bred in captivity-subsequent research about cardinals sold in our area confirmed that. Rojee is now a little more than two years old and is even more hyperkinetic than our virtually perpetually in motion lovebirds. He enjoys being in close proximity with all of our other birds and spends his days in our courtyard with the rest of our symphony-the only exception to that (other then when it is raining) is once a week he enjoys (really, as he stops his perch hopping) to listen to recorded cardinal songs. He is a great singer for many months of the year. When he isn't singing he twit, twit, twits. Payno, the half-moon conure being on top of his cage does not phase him in the least as he listens to the cardinal songs and they never attempt to bite one another (anyways, the perch situation is such that any nipping would be impossible as cardinals are not climbers as are parrots. At first (perhaps taking the cue from me) he was extremely private and did his best not to be observed eating or singing. That phase has long passed and he now has no inhibitions at all. Although one could not say that he is interactive as all of our parrots are, he enjoys being spoken to, responds to his name, and also looks all around for me when I call him when I am out of his view. He is a very healthy eater and in addition to sunflower and mixed seeds, he loves fruit, with his favorites being grapes, watermelon, cantaloupe, guava, prickly pear (tuna, in Spanish), granada/pomegranite, mamay, apple, pear, and strawberries (given in limited amounts). He has a preference for flour tortillas over corn tortillas. He is not aggressive at all, is calm when he is getting his daily repaste and now hops down for his food as soon as his door is secured. Furthermore, he very much likes being misted around once a week. Even though all of our birds are pretty, pretty, he seems to get the most attention and "muy bonita's" when we have visitors. In short or long, we are very happy to have Rojee as part of the Churintzio Symphony. If we ever get more technicologically savy, we will be posting pictures of Rojee and his compadres. Hola Les!
I really enjoyed reading about little Rojee. I could picture him. And do look forward to seeing pictures. The cardinals that live around here, are so much fun to watch. It must be nice to have one. I imagine their song, as relaxing. Thanks for sharing about little Rojee. Buenos Noches! |
