Just remember, Lories and Lorikeets are susceptible to iron storage disease. Be careful of what vegetable, and fruit, you feed... and commercial human baby food has additional iron added.

I had a beautiful Green Naped Lorikeet that I only was able to enjoy for 6 months... as his previous diet was unacceptable and he died of ISD. The best diet I have found is the ones that are prepared specifically for Lories and Lorikeets, especially ANY pellets. With a little research, you can also offer flower blossoms that are non toxic and of the correct structure for them to enjoy.

Alot of people post that baby food has iron added but I have yet to see it on a label. Any baby foods I have are clearly marked with the ingredients and say "iron 0%".

Perhaps the foods for the older babies but these 1st and 2nd foods I have here have no iron only the ingredient and water.

I DO agree that Lories should be on the Lori diet, though absolutely. I used to feed mine Nekton Lori and Avico in my store. They seemed to like the powder the best they could make it up in their water as they wanted ....I also gave some fresh foods too.

Don't recommend making your own lory food...

Hi, I've had lories for more than a dozen years and while I supplement my bird's diet with fruit (apples, and warm apple juice -- they especially love -- and pears) I would not recommend making your own lory food. Could you concoct something the bird would eat? Probably. Would it contain what he/she needs nutritionally? Probably not. You can easily order Lory Life Powder directly by calling Cuttlebone Plus at (800) 747-9878. They make the food and have had it checked out with a nutritionist. Tons of zoos use it for their lorikeet exhibits. They overnight it UPS so if you call on Monday you'll have it at your door Tuesday. You can find it (and the Lory Life Nectar but it's more expensive) at Arcatapet.com. It's cheaper there but it takes a little longer and if you've got a bird to feed...

Hi

Hello everyone! I'm brand new to this forum.
I actually stumbled on it while looking for a suitable rescue or adoption agency for a friend who has a 'tempermental' galah cockatoo and just can't keep her anymore.

As for this thread, you should definately try Nekton Lori Diet. This is the BEST stuff out there! Very well balanced diet. I've fed my 14 yr old rainbow lori on it since she was 3 months old. She goes nuts for this stuff.
Here is their website to obtain it wholesale - they will sell to individuals:
Welcome to the Nekton Homepage

In the stores, be prepared to spend 69.99 for 1000 grams (2.2 lbs). If you got thru their distribution center in Florida, you can get 6lbs for that price.
I go thru about 1 lb per month. that's about one dollar a day for this stuff, plus the cost of fruit, which you would need to provide anyway.

I feed my lori dry Nekton lori diet; she gets a mouthful and dunks it in the water and makes a paste. I used to feed it to her wet, as prescribed, but went thru it REALLY fast and she would get a mouthful and shake her head. It would get all over the place and stick like cement. Also, after 6 hours it would go sour and they won't drink/eat it. If you feed it to them dry, for some reason, they don't do that, and it won't go bad. Also, you use much less and can just keep their water fresh. No waste. Of course their diet should still be no less than 1/2 fresh or dried fruit. I use apples, pears, rasins and dried papaya. Also, I give her a drink of OJ and other assorted juices with no preservatives.

I'll add my 2 cents worth as I've been breeding and keeping lories for quite a few years with some success. Being in NZ I can't get a lot of the fancy mixes that are available in the USA so I started making my own. I also heard that a lot of the lory mixes contain undesirables such as hormones (just what you DON'T need for lories!!!) and other stuff.

This is my recipe;

Nectar or Wet Mix

1 Packet of Baby Cereal (Farex Baby Rice or something similar)
½ Cup Dextrose (available from Bin In in the wine making section)
¼ Cup Raw Sugar
½ Cup Skimmed Milk Powder
1 Heaped teaspoon Avian Vitamin/Mineral Supplement (such as Ornithon)

You will also need a tin of Maltexo to add when you make the feed up.

Instructions:

Mix all dry ingredients together and store in an airtight container.

To feed bird:

Place 1 tablespoon of dry mix into a feed cup. Add 1/3 cup cold water and mix well. Place 1 teaspoon of Maltexo in 1/3 cup of HOT water to dissolve. When Maltexo is dissolved add this water mix to the nectar paste. Mix well and serve straight away whilst still warm. I would suggest this is done twice per day (morning and evening) as the mix goes off quickly and they like it fresh and warm.

Don't know how much of this you can buy or adapt in the USA but I can promise that it works and I have very healthy, happy birds who have big, bouncing babies.

I give this once or twice per day depending on the season, breeding, etc and all my birds have dry mix available at all times too;

Lorikeet Dry Mix

2 Cups of Baby Cereal (such as Farex Baby Rice)
2 Cups Rice Four
2 Cups Egg and Biscuit mix (I substitute ground up plain biscuits or you could use condition food)
1 Cup Dextrose
1 Teaspoon Avian Vitamin/Mineral Supplement
¼ Cup Sustagen Gold or Sport (Plain or fruit flavoured if poss)
1 Tablespoon Powdered Brewers Yeast (I use Brufax flaked yeast)
1 Tablespoon Calcium Powder (I use Calcium Carbonate)

Instructions:

Crush biscuits to a powder (if necessary) and mix all ingredients together. Store in an airtight container.

In addition I feed fruit and veg and find all are eaten although not every time I offer them. The favourite is definitely corn on the cob which I feed in chunks. Second would be apple and pear closely followed by greens (silverbeet/chard, cos/romaine, broccoli, etc). Sometimes they love figs or carrots or orange (occasionally) or banana but not always. If they don't eat it once that doesn't necessarily mean they won't eat it next time. They also love any safe flowers with the absolute fave being bottle brush. Hope that is of some help.

All the best,

Heather

This is what I have been using for years for my blue-streaked. I have tried a few different brands but he wouldn't give them the time of day. I have actually been told by a local sacturary and zoo that this is what they use. Merlin eats the lory life diet on a regular basis and get the nectar mixed in with water or apple juice every morning. I like the idea of warming his apple juice for him...I think he would really like that. I have always had a hard time getting him to eat fresh fruits, he just thinks they are toys Lol. If I really mash them up for him he will kind of nibble on them but not very much. Silly bird!
