I don't know of many of us who keep lories here (actually, I don't know of any), though I'll see what I can do to help out... I know that they require a specialized diet, no seeds, no pellets (even lori pellets can cause problems from what I've heard - wouldn't know for sure however), and they tend not to care for veggies... They are lovely birds however...
Heres some links that I hope will help! http://www.kcbbs.gen.nz/lori/ar/feeding.html http://www.geocities.com/calliefeather/feed.html http://www.ozbird.wild.net.au/birds....inbow_lorikeet Good luck!

I found this recipe on a website. The person has had lorys since about 1989. I am going to try it on mine and I'll let everyone know if she likes it and decide if it's worth the time, expense and work involved vs buying the powder.
1lb carrots chopped 1 med sweet potato (baked and peeled) 6 med apples (seeded and peeled) 3 pears (seeded and peeled) 12 oz cranberry juice (100% juice) 1 lge mango 1 lge papaya 2 bananas 1/4 t iodized salt (1X per week) 3 c pellets (lori) 1 c sugar (granulated) 30 oz fruit cocktail (or fresh grapes, pineapple, apple, pears) Soak pellets in just enough warm water to cover pellets till soft. Put small amounts of everything in blender. Blend till smooth. Makes approx. 1 gallon of nectar. I am thinking of cheating and running most thru my juicer and then adding the pulp back in after. Just seems like it would make a nicer nectar than whirring it in the blender. They also tend to like: apples, pomegranites, papaya, grapes, cantelope, pineapple, figs, corn on the cob, pansie flowers, nasturtiums, roses, hibiscus, marigolds, dandelions (flowers and greens), chickweed, sprouted seed, cooked rice with yogurt and eucalyptus leaves and flowers. |

Not much to tell he is a total nut and sweet as sugar, his favorite thing to do is roll over and play dead then when you pick him up to see if he is ok he opens his eyes and blows a rasberry and giggles.
sometimes i think birds are just too smart for their own good. John

Lori nector I posted earlier is pretty easy to make but still a bit on the expensive side. My Lori doesn't drink as much of the home made nector as the store-bought. Her stools however are a little more firm with the home-made nector. I also provide her with lori pellets and fresh fruits. At first she wouldn't touch the pellets but she is now eating a few a day. She seems to be doing fine on the new diet. Course the folks I got her from were starving her to death. They thought she ate a seed diet!

Hi all...New here.
I breed a few Lories and keep more as pets. I normally give mine the Avico diet. But we also supplement with what I call the "Lory smoothie"...basically I take all kinds of fruit and throw it in the bender with some applesauce and some baby fruit. And, if I run low...I know a breeder in CA does this....2 parts regular baby formula to one part sugar. A little primative but it works. Jessie

my rainbow lorri absolutely loves veggies. What i do is very lightly steam them, then make it into a mash. And with his fruit he likes it better if it has cuts through it to make it juicy. Try giving him a whole green (or any other long bean) and see if he plays with it. mine (cookie) rolls onto his back and puts the beans in his feet.
