Well, they look like green napes to me.... although with more of an apple green nape instead of an apple yellow nape... and their markings on the chest are not as contrasting (i.e. grey vs red //// black vs red), and with less yellow on their tushes and thighs.

Otherwise though, other than looking at the Lexicon of Parrots or some Lory sites I couldn't tell you!

wow, i tried looking for some info and pics, almost nothing came up!! IF you can find one, it might be best to try to breed them if they are really that rare in aviculture, if you can find the bird a mate. they kinda look like rainbow lories though, but without so much light green on their napes, who knows, maybe there are some hybrids out there??

Hi
Im having trouble getting frontal pics of them. They dont want to cooperate with me lol. but there chests are a red/orange with no yellow and have black stripes running horazontally thru the red like tiger stripes. every pic I look at on the web i cant see the stripes. but one site ive found describes the masseas as haveing the stripeing. also the blue on there heads fades into a brownish to light black as described on the same site as massenas. hopefully I will be able to get some better pics of them soon. Thanks for your help
Jeff

I believe they are green napes... I could be wrong but that's what they look like to me!

I've taken some great green nape shots for you to compare with!

First off, for the massenas, check out this link and click on the images...
Massena's Lorikeet

Now, for the green napes!

Two playing....

Two others playing

"Handfeeding"

One sitting on a post (there were actually 3 others near it... but lower down)

One climbing on their net

And two enjoying some company!

From my understanding, all of the lories in these pics, except one, are green napes.... however, I do have pics of some other species (although I don't know if any are hybrids or not)...

Thanks Monica

Monica Thanks alot I think you are right about the green napes. that is exactly what they look like. Ive looked at all the lorries sites which arent many and your pics are the ones they look like. Its very hard to find pics of lories and the sub species. of them I understand there are like 16 sub species of rainbows alone. and then with the hybrids. It makes it more difficult. I figured I had normal rainbows till I got to looking around a bit more. Then knew I didnt so you helped me out alot!!
Thanks again
Jeff

Glad they helped! And I understand your confusion!!!!

When I first got Noel, my cherry head, I was told she was either a cherry head or a mitred. That was back in 2001 when there was HARDLY any info on the internet about them! It took me a few weeks to figure it out for sure, especially since some of the pictures are misleading!

Then, when I went to pick up Charlie, the cherry head, well... I realised he was no cherry head at all but a mitred! And it doesn't help for the fact that there ARE other red headed conures that look similar (i.e. Waglers, Finsch's, White-Eyeds... and with hybrids there, too... even in the Pyrrhuras you have the Hoffmans and Rose-Crowns...). These birds are easily mistaken for one another!

So, in truth, I'd hate to have a variety of rainbow lories, and not know each ones species or subspecies!!!
