I agree with Ringneckmom, I think it is better to go with a commercially-developed diet supplemented with fresh fruits & vegetables over a completely homemade diet. I've seen several witches brew recipies online and in books, but I think it is better to go with a diet that can be backed up with scientific data, not the empirical data many bird owners provide.
The prices for lory powder are really comparable to the prices for other parrot foods- excluding seeds of course. Seeds are incredibly cheap. The nectar powder is more expensive, but most references I've seen really recommend limiting the amount of nectar you feed your companion lories so whatever amount you buy will last quite a while. The breeder I am buying my bird from rarely feeds her birds nectar. She weans them onto Avico Lory Life Powder and a homemade "smoothie" made from seasonal fruits and vegetables.

I have 2 rainbow lorikeets, they are the most hilarious birds I have ever seen and they can be noisy as well as messy but I think it's worth it to have these 2 wonderful little clowns. I find their mess very easy to clean so I don't see it as a problem.

In the shops that I have been into around here in Sydney, we don't seem to see many of them, and the hand raised ones are even rarer, so that might account for the low numbers of people owning them, and posting about them.

I got my Rainbow Lorikeet yesterday, and he is a beautiful bird. We have had a few messes, but they have been easy to clean up. I also put an extra layer of newspaper down to help with the daily cage cleaning.

Ours is an a small cage at the moment so we can moniter him, and make sure he is adapting to his new diet properly (the last people who owned him fed him a diet of wild parrot seeds and nothing else , so I have included some seeds in the foods I have given him, but have soaked them, as well as adding parrot pellets to make a light porrage for him as well as giving him necter and some fruit and veg, although he has no idea what to do with the fruit or veg Poor baby!).

They also used to flick him as they would walk past the cage, so I also have a fair bit of training, and socialising to do with him, but he is around 2 years old, so we have plenty of time to tame and train him. So far today he has riden my shoulder twice, and was very well behaved, with only a couple of hard head buts (which frightened me so much , I thought he was getting ready to snack on my ear )

I have a 9 month old scaley breasted lorikeet that i handraised and i wouldnt trade him for the world!! he is the most beautiful little darling you could ever imagine!! SUCH a clown and very hyperactive, but so so much fun..

lately he has been getting a little territorial, and bit me twice and drew blood, but he knows he was very naughty and 99% of the time he is good. those are the only times he has bitten that hard.

he does bite a little bit when he knows he's going back into his cage, but its bearable!
