The difference between a lorikeet and a lory is the size of their bodies and supposedly tails too... However many lorikeets or called lories just to shorten the name.... very hyper birds, and messy too!

The lorikeet has a longer pointed type tail and may tend to be a little smaller then the lory which has the shorter and squarish tail.

The black lory and the Duyvenbodes are the typical lory - they are two of the largest in the lory family - compare their tail to the green nape tail and you will see the difference.

As the other people noted, the major difference is the size of the bird and their tails. Historically, the names were just used out of convenience and some people use lorikeet to describe both types of birds.

Besides being gorgeous, lories are one of the cutest, most playful birds I've seen. I saw one playing with a child's toy 3 times it's size, rolling over on it's back and throwing the toy around. I wouldn't want to own one though, way too messy and need special food. Other than what my birds need, that is.
