Beautiful bird! Congratulations! I've been privileged to see (not be owned by) many lories as there used to be a champion lory aviculturist here in the Denver, Colorado area. (Unfortunately she went off the deep end and her birds were confiscated last year.....)

Here's a link to some information about duskies and there's a photo of the yellow phase. I don't know how old the link is but it also gives information on pricing: Dusky Lories

He is stunning!!! And looks like quite the snuggler :)

I think his leg band looks ok, and you will want to keep it on him if you ever plan to travel with him. Airport security cares (especially if it is international) if they are imported or bred. And plus if he did ever escape on you it would be his only tracking devise.

New Dusky baby

Yoshi is beautiful. I had a pair of Goldie's Lorikeets and sold them recently to a local woman who breeds a handful of lory species, mainly Duskies. Definitely her favorite lories are Duskies and I really enjoyed going over there and meeting her pets and breeders. I think you made a great choice in getting a Dusky!!! The only thing is they are so relentlessly friendly about sticking their tongues in your ears!!! They REALLY root around and it tickles but you have a hard time stopping them!

It seems that some of the lory breeders out there don't prefer Duskies due to their voices, and so they kind of get a 'bad rap'. I think since you are used to a Sun Conure, you are the perfect person to get a Dusky, lol! I'm now thinking after meeting my friend's birds that they are one of my favorite lories, her pet male was just so sweet, talked like crazy, hung upside down from my hand, and was stunning. Almost all species of lories are becoming rare in the US unfortunately...I found my Goldie's not as messy as all the things I read prior to getting them. Sure, it helps to hose down their whole cage weekly and have a washable curtain tacked up on the wall behind them, but other than that, they are pretty easy parrots...and so smart and beautiful!

The big issue for me is I can't get into being a breeder right now and they need to be bred because other breeders need the bloodlines to keep them around, and they will try to attack my other parrots so I need a bigger house with a separate room just for lories. They are too aggressive for my regular parrrots, and smart enough to know who they can attack. They go for my Quaker and my Patagonian Conure, because both birds can't fly.

Once you get a single lory though, they tend to bond to people and have trouble being breeders. And their lifespan is shorter than most other parrots, for Duskies more like 15 to 20 years I think. But what great birds.

man only a lifespan of 15 to 20? Well happy years i know. Yes I know about the toungue tickling! lol! He like to tickle with it all the time and he is quite the snuggler! He has officially claimed my body as his favorite playgym and prefers it to his toys ive bought him. You should see him when I open my cage door, he practically races to the opening to get to me! :)
I'm trying to train him to enjoy both me and his toys though.
I can tell the breeder did a great job socializing him. It shows most deffinetaly.
Thankyou all for all your wonderful advice and comments. They are much appreciated.
I find the pooping not to be a problem, actually less of a nuisance than seed hulls everywhere to vacuum up!

One question, do lories need a cuttlebone or calcium block as seed eaters do? Or is it different for theses nectar eaters?

I have a rainbow lory who's my baby. She lives in a big cage in my bed room and every day when I get home she bobs up and down and says hello hello hello! and squeaks at me to let her out- when I open the door she lunges for it and leaps onto my hand and crawls up my arm, onto my shoulder to purr in my ear and kiss my cheek! She is the most affectionate, loving, intelligent bird I've ever had. Out of all the birds I've had, I've found lories to be the most friendly and trainable. The lifespan of a lori is up to about 25 years on average, but of course this could go up substantially! Cockatiels are sposed to live for 15 years but I've heard of 30 and even 40 year old tiels! As for the poop, I find it easier to clean liquid poop than great globs of it! Also, Loris don't spread husks like other species, and their feathers don't constantly replace themselves, since they are so tight on the body. My girl hangs upside down, shakes hands, dances, flaps wings on command, rolls on her back like a kitten and grabs my hand with her feet, grabs toys and lies on her back and holds them in her feet while chewing them... if her toys roll away, she'll pounce on them like a cat! Her wings are clipped so I take her everywhere- she loves sitting on the head rest of the car seat and watching the world wizz by (windows closed of course!) Also, I'm sure you do- but make sure you wipe out his food/water bowls thoroughly every single day because these birds are prone to yeast infections cause of their high sugar diet! You really gotta clean the bottom of the cage evry day- or evry two days... their poop is a perfect breeding ground for bacteria! Have fun with your lori! They're the clowns of the bird world!!!

Lories have brushes on their tongues so nectar is their main source. seed wears down the brush which is bad. Also why they shoot poo lol. Very pretty birds and can be very noisy...especially when a huge group of rainbows hand outside your house and scream at each other lol. Still, very nice birds though.
