let him start flying in a small room like a bathroom but make sure the toilet lid is down and he will have no access to any open water. Then eventually once he gets the hang of it you can let him fly around larger rooms aslong as you take the dangers away.
But do please let him understand what flying is and how to do it properly before you even concider clipping him. |

I was thinking of a gradual clip... one that would allow a more 'controlled' glide instead of flight. It could be that the lory is scared and confused and isn't aware of the 'boundaries'. It may be better to take him around and show him, and even let him touch the boundaries so maybe he might be able to understand.

My lory has been clipped since i got him at 5 weeks and he runs and walks everywhere. he got the idea that he couldnt fly very quickly, but if he occasionally tries to he glides down safely. I reccommend clipping, but if you dont want to, try not to startle him, that is the only time pickles tries to fly.

Even clipped birds need to be flighted occasionally.... as it helps keep their flight muscles in shape and keeps them healthy.

my poor little cookie doesnt have any idea how to fly, he flaps and makes a racket on the cage door but when he takes a jump from the roof of the cage its like he doesnt know he has to flap his wings. Its quite sad to see.

You can teach him or her to do flap-flaps. Gently hold the tops of the toes against the finger he is perched on, and carefully raise and lower your arm. Your bird ought to flap his wings. Do this a few times a day, every day, so s/he can develop the flight muscles. After a few weeks, aim him at your bed from a few feet away, by letting go of the tops of his toes on a downward movement as he is flapping. I always use an enthusiastic tone of voice when I tell a young bird that he or she is doing flap-flaps, and tell them how good they are.
