Monkey and Frenchy are my Rainbow lorikeets, i started out with Monkey i had gotten him as a pet but he became extremely aggressive as he got older his personality would switch with a quickness, one minute he was my lovebug boo the next he was Lorikeetzilla even tho he was very well socialized he would spend 90% of the time out and about with me or on his play gym, i then decided to get another Lorikeet to keep him company and to be a friend to him since he ovisouly wasnt going to change his aggressive behavior, Frenchy came into our lifes and he fell in love right away he would feed her and preen her feathers all day, and about 4 months ago i decided to put them in a larger cage with a next box and to my surprise Frenchy had laid 2 eggs which only 1 hatched im so happy, heres a few pics of Mommy Daddy and Squirt AKA "Poopie Squirter"

You have the perfect nestbox! I saw a lorikeet's nest- strangely only 2 meters about the ground- in a hollow branch and it went dooooooowwwwwwnnnnn so deep I couldn't see inside! What a beautiful baby!!! I wish I got Ash at that age!

Thank you guys for the kind words, Ashling: lorikeets choose the box i had 3 made and allowed them to pick, they chose the slanted box, i hope i get more than one baby next time, the baby you see in the pic is weaned and will go to her new home soon. How old is Ashling?...did you purchase her? (i ask this because i know lorikeets are wild in Australia)

I'm not surprised they chose that one! It's naturally the kind they nest in. It's still a great nest box! I hope you get more babies next time too. You're so lucky to have a breeding pair. I would love to breed, but I want Ash to be my one and only! lol
Ashling is now 8 months old. I'm guessing by the colour her beak was that she was 10 weeks when I got her. I bought her from a (terrible) bird seller. Dirty cages with poo up the walls, featherless patches on birds, sick looking birds, lights on 24/7, dusty, no sunlight, dirty water, not right food (only dry mix for the lorikeets!) no vegies for any of them and more. Also, he never tells buyers how to care for the bird, or any questions really, just sells them. I went back months later and asked for records to see what Ash's hatchday was and he said he got birds in all the time and it'd be too hard to find her records, and said to count back 6 weeks from when I got her. Which was wrong! IDIOT!
If I had of known then what I know now, I wouldn't have got a bird from him, but I'd had a lorikeet before and knew I would get one again, and I fell in love. And I'm glad I did! Ash is the best bird I have ever owned and talks, does tricks and loves me sooo much.
It's illegal to catch lorikeets from the wild here. I've had a many chances but Id never take a wild bird.

I hate when all people want is money, i never intended to breed (i didnt even know i had a pair) till one day i saw them mate and Monkey would feed Frenchy constanty so i decided to add a nest box and they laid 2 eggs but only 1 hatched.
What can Ashling say?...Monkey said "you be nice" "come here" "Yvette come here" "pretty bird" "i love my bear" ( he use to be inlove with a blue stuffed bear, hes in love with stuffed animals) he smooches kisses on his bear or on frenchy, he also sais "hey buddy" in a soft voice, can you post a pic of Ashlings cage? im very interested in seeing how others keep their lories and what kind of toys they use, im developing a Lorie/Lorikeet toy line.

I know! Why would you get into breeding if not for the joy of it! I'm sure it's not enjoyable when they are suffering at your hands! I was the same as you when I bred budgies- I got an aviary that came with a nest box they just started mating and laying eggs and voila! BABIES!
All the babies have died now though- I gave two to a friend, and they escaped and flew away, and the one I hand raised while we were driving moving to another state got a disease from mice when he was 2 :(

Ashling does more tricks than words for now. She's only 8 months old so I plan on increasing her vocab. Her ticks are:
Wave- I wave a hand and she waves a foot and says "hello,"
Flap-flap; I open and close my hand and she flaps her wings and says "flap-flap,"
Wiew; I raise and drop my arm quickly when she's perched on it and she says "wiew wiew wiew!" (like the Gir character off the Invader Zim series! hehehe),
Turn around; she turns on my hand or perch,
1, 2, 3 fly; she flies to me, or from me onto her cage,
Jump; she jumps/ flaps to my arm from a perch,
Shake hands; well, she holds my finger really- my hand's a bit big! hehe,
Come here Ash; she comes when called and walks to where my finger is pointing, or steps up,
Grab; holds something that I give her with her foot,
Go potty; on command, but also whenever she feels the need!
Gimme kiss; I kiss her beak and she makes a kissy noise,
and High-5; she holds out a foot for me to high 5.

I want her to learn to speak each of her commands as she does them, but she's only learnt three for now. I also want her to learn to say "yum yum yum" for food and "drink" for water, She is learning to roll over on her back when I make a gun shot noise. It's a slow process but we're enjoying it. I haven't got a training resume yet- I should probably get onto that!

Her cage is the biggest I could afford using pocket money! Sorry I don't have a pic but it's about 3 foot height x 2 feet length x 2 feet width. Oh it looks bigger than it sounds to me! She is so tiny in it! There's also a branch gym I made that's attatched to the side/ top of the cage with a wooden chew toy, a swirly straw, a ladder with rainbow knobs on the rungs, rope, a toothbrush (she likes the bristle feeling and I smear honey into them!), a wind chime and rainbow socks tied to the branches-oh and every second day she gets native flowers tied on too. Her favorite toys are her tinkle bell balls, the wind chime and the tooth brush, if that helps!

lol I had a lot to write :/ Honestly, I could write a book. How old is your baby rainbow now?
