I just hope it isnt too serious.....is it normal for lori's once they have had there food to stick their claws down their throat and like regertate (sorry i cant spell!) he seems to do that every time he has eaten??

Oh Emma! <hugs> I do hope everything goes well with the vet and he/she can reassure you. Plucking can be a nightmare all on its own but at least you will know where you stand if you eliminate everything else first. The vet should be able to give you the results within a few days and also advice on what to do. Please do keep us posted on progress as I'm sure there are many people rooting for you and your boy. If you can establish that it is a self-inflicted problem then there are many things that can be done (up to and including little birdy jumpers! ) so fear not, we are here to help and support!

All the best,

Heather

Good News!!

Hey guy

Sorry it's taken me long to post a reply...it's good news the vet said there isnt anthing wrong with him...he didnt even get him out of his cage and said he wouldnt need blood test's because he was a 100% that it wasnt anything serious he said that because he has been plucking for so long the hair foliculs (sorry i cant spell!) have gone to sleep and it is probably likely that they wont grow back but he has given me some oil to try and stimulate them....the oil is called AVI-x Sun shine factor (they have a website AVIx) not sure if any of you guy's have heard of it?? he has to have 1gram a day mixed in with his food, he also sugested that i soak sponge cake in lori nectur and add it to that.

So fingers crossed it may help...he only spoke to me for about 5mins and said that he seems a happy bird, he didnt even say give it a few months and come back!!!

Lorry does get feathers growing on his legs but they dont seem to last long so he is still be plucking them...hopefully the oil may help

Emma xx

the ingredient list is 100% red palm oil. 9.95 for one oz from the factory...

well, its not great that he didn't take blood, and I don't know why you'd need to give the stuff in sponge cake? why not just add it to the food.
heres the directions on the stuff

Quote:
DIRECTIONS Sunshine Factor is semisolid at room temperature. To liquefy, place bottle in warm water (about 80°F [27°C]) for a few minutes. Combine 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of the liquefied Sunshine Factor with 1 pound (0.45 kg) of the animal’s consumable food (not seeds) in a mixing bowl and stir. Return the food mixture to its original bag for storage. Or, give the bird 1-3 drops orally per 100 grams body weight per day as recommended by your veterinarian.

Wee bit concerned that the vet didn't even remove your little bud from his cage. I have seen enough of chicken-hearted vets to last me a lifetime! Just glad that he thinks there is nothing to worry about and it is plucking after all.

Plucking is a hard one to solve when it is this far advanced and my first suggestion would be some kind of jumper/flight suit to cover at least some of the affected area so you can see what you are actually dealing with. IF pin feathers start emerging in the unobtainable areas then you can start thinking about other methods. I am totally with Swanwillow on the spongecake thing. There is no sense or reason to adding it to your lory's diet when you can add the prescribed oil to his his wet food and dry food as long as you are careful how you do it. I would be far more tempted to be adding a feather supplement to his water (Feather Up, Moulting Aid, etc) and making sure that his diet is as good as possible. It may be that you will just have to accept that you have a baldy on your hands and adjust your management accordingly. He will need extra warmth in the winter and protection from the sun if he is outside in the hotter months. If you notice him starting to mutilate himself (any bleeding areas) then you will need to start a whole new regime but my guess would be you have inherited what his previous owner laid up for you. Nothing to say he can't live a perfectly normal life with a few adjustments and he is clearly loved so he is one lucky lory!

All the best,

Heather

Thank you guys for the avice. I think he suggested sponge cake because the stuffs like wax you have to place it in warm water to melt it then put it in his food and its oil so it wont mix with his lori nectur so its a way of it being absorbd it doesnt smell very nice so I dont blame the little guy for not wanting it.... he has been with the sponge but I have to mask it with plenty of honey!!

I'll try have a look in the pet shop for the feather up and try that aswell. Im in the process of moving out and buying my own house....I've also bought him a new cage which is 4times bigger than the one he has got...do you think this would help?

I think I may need to get in a routine with him so he knows when it's play time....he does scream quite a lot..also sorry I'm going to ask loads of questions all in one go here!! like I say I dont know alot about lorikeets but I dont want to give him up I love him too much so I want to get things right for him. right here goes:

1. I read some where that lorikeets sleep on their perch is this true? (because when I cover him up and say nite he says it back he goes to sleep at the bottom of him cage, never have I seen him sleep on his perch)

2. He also goes to the bottom corner of his cage to scratch the bottom of the floor why does he do this?

3. If I got another bird as a buddy for him do you think this would help?

4. He also tries to mate everything if it's not my hand it's his toys or the fruit that I give him...is this common in lorikeets?

5. When Lori's play do they bite? he plays with me but seems to bite quite alot (like a little puppy) and somtimes it really hurts...think he finds it funny when he bites hard beause he shouts ouch for me if I dont say it!!!

Heather I might try a flight jacket...depending on how they fit on...because I'm not sure if he will let me put it on him...do you think they will sell them on ebay?

Swanwillow did you say the person you know who's bird was bald is still bald...or is growing feathers back? maybe it would be worth me chatting to her.

Sorry for the essay guy's!!! you are the experts though so i'll look forward to your advice...thank you so much again!!
