hey guys, I have just had my lorikeet for a little over 4 months now, she is hand reared and was an excellent bird when i first got her. I used to work in a petshop and i fell inlove with her and just had to get her.. the thing is that she has been very close and cuddly since i had her, she even will sleep on my lap, sometimes i get up and take her to bed with me. But just lately she has been playing up, she constantly runs away from me and hides behind the furniture and under the couch where i cant get her, she does not bite but tho she does scream and carry on when i put my finger with her. I have to get the towl out sometimes to be able to catch her now dont get me wrong that is the extreme measure because half the time she is the reason why i am late for work. I come home from work and i always let her out, run around and play whenever im there to supervise her. but just lately she has become her own bird and does not really want anything to do with me. I want to spend time with her but i really cant if she just runs off on me all the time. My guess is that its just her growing up and its just a stage but i am not sure. If possible could i get some enlightment on the situation and some tips?

It is a stage, i made the mistake to let my lorikeet Monkey "get over it" for about a week and he is no longer a loving cuddly lil fella, hes lorikeetzilla, i advise you not to give up, buy toys that you know she likes and encourage her to play with you, feed her her favorite treats when shes with you and being good.

Oh, I can't imagine what you're going through. My lorikeet Ash is cuddly and loving, and I sometimes take her to bed with me too, although we're cutting down on that cause it's dangerous! (it's so cute though!) It must be terrible to have that relationship go backwards a little.
Your lorikeet is old enough now to start trying to establish her rank in the pecking order of your 'flock.' Food, food FOOD! If Ashling is ever hesitant of anything- peas, apples, native flowers, spinach and even something like a lollipop can work wonders... especially when I pretend to eat it- noisily- myself. Today, for instance, I was teaching her to fly down from the stair rails, and I had to pretend to eat a pea, telling her how yummy it is, to get her finally to fly down. I'm really confused as to why yours is so very frightened though... my girl never went through a scared stage, except for when I went on holidays for a few days and she was 'wilder' when I got back. Is there anything in particular that could have brought it on? Could there have been a traumatic experience happen to her, even when you weren't there? Maybe you'll have to start at the beginning and go from talking near her cage, to offering her favorite foods through the bars, to offering fave foods through the cage door, to holding the food behind a finger to make her step up to get the food, to automatic step-ups, to slowly bringing her out on your finger, to having her out again... over a period of about a week, the end of the week being when she's alowed out again. It may sound stupid, as she was so tame and cuddly before, but it's just a suggestion. I guess it will build that trust back up again. Hope it turns out well, you two can get through this stage! What's her name and species by the way? Got any pics? :D Take care.

Just like humans, my Lorikeet has good days and bad days for no particular reason. He also chooses his favourite human for the day and snubs the others. Our Lorikeet will sometimes do something similar if we're late only for five minutes during our daily routine or even when we spend a little less time playing during playtime. I think she doesn't like you leaving her when going to work! It's her way of saying she's upset. If have the time and home for the day, just let your Lori be and she'll come out when ready. If ignored or gets 'stuck' she'll soon do everything to be cuddling again ;) On work days try what Ashling suggests with food. Monster Towel will be used less as your relationship strengthens and understand each other more with time :)

Well good job with the training, you obviously did it well! How old is she now? Do you have her DNA sexed? I need to make sure Ash is a girl- if she's a boy, I'll have to change her name to Asher, or Ash.
Oooh do you have the pics up yet? "now she won't want leave me alone.. If I give her the chance to get out of her cage she will jump out and run after me with her wings out jumping and following she's learning so much its unbelievable when ever im playing with her ball she will chase it screaming" She sounds so much like Ashling! I love lorikeets :D My first lorikeet Charlie used to say p!$$ off too! Ash can say hello, flap flap and just the other day she said ASH! I think come here in next on the list, but dang that is cute! What else can Monty say?
