Help With Ideas Please

Hi all,

I'm new to the bird world, I've purchased a red collar cross, olive cross, Rainbow lorikeet. I've had him / her (Yet to be sexed) for about 2 weeks I try and spend as much time with him every day he's normally out and about for 3 - 4 hours everyday. I've read afew different books on small parrots, and on lorikeets in general, now going off one of these books, it states that they can be 'tamed and trained' in 4 hours... Not for me.... I have one good day with him, and 4 - 5 days where he doesn't like to be handled, and becomes real flighty. I would love some help with training him, ideas on how to do it, or reference material to read. I would really like him to enjoy being handled, and so forth...

Thanks

Shannon

I have had a few differant kinds of birds for a few years now. I love them all and they are all differant both in species and individually. I have never been able to train a bird in 4 hours. I do not know what you read either. I have a rainbow that looks almost just like yours. I have only had him for 6 months. In the last month, I have been able to handle him without fear. It has taken that long to get to know him. I finally had him sexed a few weeks ago. I don't like him on my shoulders as I do my other birds, he likes to get tangled up in my hair then as I try to get him out. he had bitten me. He is a bit tempermental. He has his days. I truely am enjoying him. He is different. I would be happy to share what I know, but it is not a lot, I too am still learning.

I scored quite the bite, of loki the other days, first time that he scored blood on me... it's frustrating at times, when ya just want to strangle them. :P but I'm trudging along. I realise it takes time, so I'm still keen... Take care...

Hi there...
I have a Rainbow Lorri...
She was about 1 yr old when i got her...
When i first got her she was a bit scared....
She would sit on my shoulder and get onto my finger but wouldnt let me touch her...I have had her for about 10 months now... and she is a great little bird...but very tempermental... i can only scratch her or hold her when she is in the mood...I dont think you can train a bird in 4 - 5 hrs... it has taken me sometime with my Lorri...
I now let her in the back yard dailey... she climbs trees and wonders around... and always comes home and never go's 2 far...
I am also still learning but happy 2 let u know what i know...
Goodluck... aussie_Girl

hello I have a rainbow lorrie too I think its a he but not 100 percent sure. Some birds dont like things that others do eg cookie doesnt like to be scratched on his head unless he has an itch then he will let us other wise he runs away but he likes a belly rub. I would just take it slowly with him/her and they really love toys and things to play with. I have had cookie since mothers day this year and now my little girl who will be 4 at christmas can get him to step up for her he actually sees her coming now and he tells her to step up. but if you just get to know each other without trying too hard to train i find it goes a lot smoother. good luck and please keep us posted on how you are going.
