Question New Lori

Hey there I have a new Rainbow Lorikett. He was hand reared and I brought him from a pet shop. In the pet shop he was friendly and kind however when I got him home he wont have a bar of me. Is there anything I can do to help him get along with me??

Welcome and congrats on the new baby! Don't worry, this is perfectly normal. The pet shop you bought him from was a familiar place to him. He would have had his home (cage) and a place to talk to his birdy friends. They are always friendly and excited in the petshop, just wanting to play.
Suddenly, he's in a new place and it can be overwhelming for a little baby at first. He'll go quiet and shy and may even nip in fright. With gentle encouragemt, he will soon get used to his new home and start exploring. Give him a little while to settle into his new room, and survey his surroundings. When he's settled a bit, sit by his cage- talk to him, whistle, chirp and sing to him. If you're lucky, he might respond. If not, that's ok. Keep telling him how much fun you're going to have ;) How old's your bub and was he hand reared? Can he step up? Young hand reared lorikeets adapt pretty easily to new places. Have a read through some of the threads on the lorikeet board, and you'll learn lots about them!

Thank you

Thanks for the reply. He isnt all that old. I think the pet shop said 7 weeks old. He was hand reared but doesnt step up. He will eat treats off my finger and out of my hand. He is, as you said, very quiet and shy.

I will take our advise and talk to him alot while he is in the cage.

Yes good advise indeed. He needs time to adjust to his new home. Usually 3 weeks or so..

Do you have pics? I'd love to see him. When Ash was in the petshop, she was crawling all over me, licking me and softly beaking my skin. When I got her home she was alert and afraid and tried to fly away from me (her wings were clipped though). She was great by the end of the week and was talking a doing tricks a few months later. Lorikeets can't help but make the best fun they can out of their environment!

Thankyou

No I dont have any pictures yet. I'm so glad to see that this behaviour is normal I was a little worried to begin with. If you havent figured out he is my first bird. I've had budgies before but a Lorikeet is something else.

He is becoming more comfortable now. Chirps every so often and sometimes steps up onto my finger, with a little bribe of course. I've started clicker training him and its working really well. So hopefully within a few weeks or so he will be happy and at home here lol

hehe lorikeets are VERY different from budgies! I had budgies and cockatiels before lorikeets and the former are so graceful compared to my clumsy, goofy lorikeet!
Sounds like you're making progress! Keep up the good work ;) He should be fine in a little while- they warm up quickly with positive reinforcement; love, games and food.
