Diet question

Hello,

I'm a new Lorikeet owner and I have a question about proper diet for my bird. It seems she will only drink nectar; I provide water, fresh fruit and Lory feed for her, but she ignores those for the nectar. Is this acceptable? Should I remove the nectar until she eats something else?

Also, since all she's eating is nectar, I wanted to make sure that two long glass cylinder feeders of nectar per day are sufficient.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Sandy Wodke

Is the nectar you are feeding her one that is especially formulated for a Lory diet? Also, it might help to find out what she was eating, prior to coming into your home.

The nectar is for lories. The people at the pet store I got her from said that she eats the nectar, fresh fruit daily, and the lory pelleted mix. She ate some banana off my finger today, but she still doesn't seem interested in any fruit put in the cage, plain water or the lory mix.

The nectar is fine, but i also would recomend that you try "Lory Life" powder its great for them...Bananas can cause digestive problems (i've seen this in my lories aswell as breeders).
Try feeling fruits like watermelon, papaya, and mango they also seem to like carrots, i steam them and make a mash for them with a cucumber (remove the seeds) and a little bit of organic honey mixed in it or sugar free applesause.
If you are going to feed her Lorie pellets, make sure to soak them in either water or 100% apple juice.
And try to avoid grapes and raisins (even tho they love them, its not good for them)

Hope that helps.

Thanks so much for your help. I'm ordering the lory life powder today, since they don't have it at the pet store. I fed her some applesauce and she seemed to like that-but only when I fed it to her off my fingers. I'll try some of the other fruits you mentioned.
