Lorikeet and Cockatiel
Hi
Im might be about to get a new baby rainbow lorikeet and i already have a cockatiel in the cage where the lorikeet will be going, so im just wondering if they could live in the same cage alright and not fight. Thanks |

Absolutely not.
As already mentioned, the diet requirements are vastly different (lories eat nectar, while cockatiels can eat pellets, seeds, etc.). Also, lories are known to be aggressive to birds of other species, and because a lory is so much larger than a cockatiel, serious injury could be the result. Lories are also extremely active birds, and would probably drive a cockatiel nuts with all the bouncing around. If you cannot afford to house the two birds in separate cages, then I would refrain from purchasing a lory until you can financially provide both birds with suitable individual living spaces. |

You should most definitely not house them together! You'll have to quarantine the new bird before letting them in the same ROOM, let alone the same CAGE, anyway. My lorikeet annoys my cockatiels to no end. She never stops chasing them around, jumping at them and hopping around them... for a quiet cockatiel it can be pretty stressful. My lorikeet has hurt my budgie before too- they can be overzealous when playing.
Eg. Note cockatiels posture and expression: ![]() This explains itself!

Sorry but gotta agree with everyone else. The diet is a big issue amongst others.
My lorikeets got along well with the suns when they were all out together, and I had one budgie that was a very dominant personality who would preen one of the lorikeets. Cockatiels are incredibly sensitive souls and the brashness of the in your face hyperactive lorikeet is way too much for the average 'tiel to cope with. Get a different cage for so many reasons. Don't know if your 'tiel would appreciate living in the pigpen that becomes the average lorikeet cage very quickly either (or maybe that's just my poop squirters). In time you may be able to have them both out together but will have to be vigilant with supervision.

I'd recommend against it. Size, general personality and diet requirements would cause a very uncomfortable cage for everyone. I'm sure the lory would tire your cockatiel very quickly, as they play so differently. Sometimes, lories dont get along well in a cage with another bird and can become aggressive. I have that problem with my lory, she wont get along with anyone else for more than 10 minutes. Shes a brat!
