Poe!

Been considering/waiting for this little man since January and looking for a black lory for I don't even know how long. He's 2 and he's my little gothic darling (or will be once he realizes I am not here to eat him). Took a few quick pictures (out of 37 1 came out clear, did you know lories hop? A lot? heh) before I fall asleep standing up and he falls asleep with his head in the nectar bowl.

haha little gothic darling, that's an adorable nickname! I wouldn't mind one as a friend for Ash- I've been wanting a new baby but there are so many species. Black lories are so beautiful. Do you know if they're available in Australia? You'll have to tell me all about their character once you have him ;) Yes I am well aware that lories hop... a lot! :p

Check this out... he looks like a mini- galaxy:

I knew they hopped, it was one of the traits that endeared me to them, doesn't make for good head shots though heh. He's gorgeous up close, he was too skittish for me to feel ok with sticking the camera all over the cage for too long to catch his sultry look but up close his colors are amazing.

Once he's more comfortable I'll have him out and take more pictures, the lighting in that room is the worst, avian lamps don't do well on film and there's only one small window. He has his adult colors so around his eyes and beak is completely jet black unlike that link which is of a juvenile, the feather colors are the same though, iridescent purples and blues and a gorgeous red and yellow tail. So spooooky. :D

So far he's made THE LOUDEST sound I have ever heard (and I have a U2!!). It was like the STRANGER DANGER BEEP OF IMMINENT DOOM! and he also growled a few times in this possessed Exorcist sort of way that almost had us wet ourselves it was so tuff! It was so late when he got here I just made sure he saw where I put down a bowl and a plate of nectar and a bowl of water for him and left him alone. He seemed to like the cage platform I put in and the hammock and tasted everything which he seemed to find to his satisfaction.

We played the blinking game until he nearly fell over sideways after a minute and then it was lights out. He did come check me out eye to eye and is molting so he rubbed his head all over the side of the cage in the cutest way, hope he lets me touch him soon so I can help with some of those pin feathers.

I have no idea if they are available in AU, if they are that whole family (Chalcopsitta) which includes the Cardinals, Yellow Streaks and Duyvenbodes is a good bet, from what I've read they are not as aggressive (to birds or people) as others. I'm giving him another 15 minutes to sleep and then going in to bug him.

Oh and he seems to be a downward shooter.

Oh yeah, lories are one of the hardest birds to photograph, they will just not sit still! Lol! I cannot wait to hear all about Poe, I have never seen a black lory, but I think they are stunning in photographs.

Yeah Ash is so difficult to photograph- you click and she moves! Wow he sounds absolutely gorgeous. I'm so jealous! I heard that they are very loud though and you backed that up... nothing I'm not used to (Ashling won't shut up today) Oh and I found out they are available here in Aus too :D Can't wait to hear more! And see more! ;)

Black Lories are gorgeous, and Poe is no exception. :) Can't wait to hear about his adventures. :D

As for Black Lories in Australia, they are $3000 AUD for a hand reared baby.

Yikes that's a lot. So far he's more of a funny hungry houseplant since I've just been leaving him in his cage to settle in. He was handfed but out in an aviary for the past 6 months so he is not at all used to people. He eats his body weight in nectar a day!

Mostly I sit next to him and talk quietly and sing him little songs. Today and last night he's really started lory-ing around his cage like a madman and licking exploring every nook toy and cranny so I will probably open up the cage soon so he can go between it and his playstand while I'm in the room.

He makes really cute little chirps in his sleep. He loves to be misted and licks himself all over afterwards. He's definitely becoming interested in me and I catch him peeking out from under or around things when he thinks I'm not watching. :D

Not really sure how I can start marker training with him, so far I click every time I put a new food dish in so he gets used to the click, food idea but as far as treats go what do I give him that isn't directly on my hand, he likes fruit but only mashed in his bowl. He will let me leave my hand in his cage without flittering around now maybe I will douse it with honey and see what happens. Most likely I will just get stuck to a perch though. I'm going to give him some more time before expecting miracles or pushing him. His personality is definitely beginning to come out though and he is a sweet inquisitive bird.

Laura has a connection with a baby for $1200... *crumbles* Sooo tempting. Poe sounds like he's settling in nicely, he's gonna be the best little guy the way you're going with him! Oh and by the way, incase you haven't noticed... he is beautiful! He's so jumpy!

He hasn't actually walked even half an inch since he's been here, he does tiny little hops or big hops and also flutters around. He is too cool for walking or even siddling down the perch, hopping only. Guess when you eat your body weight in nectar a day you have that kind of energy. I guess he does climb the sides of his cage but hops the rest of the time. Hasn't hung upside down as much as I expected but maybe that's because his food isn't upside down and it's hard to get his face out of his dish.
