A Full Recovery!

Our Red Lory Orbit, Who scared us half to death a few weeks ago when he become suddenly and seriously ill, has made a full recovery! The vet thinks the sudden illness was caused by Orbit ingesting a bacteria that breached the intestinal wall and got into his bloodstream where it caused him to become septic. We were able to keep Orbit alive by tube feeding him and giving an antibiotic to kill the bacteria. He has gained back neary 20 grams since the ordeal and is back to his silly, bouncy, chatty, cute self. Everyone was surprised that Orbit seemed to turn around just as quickly as he became ill but we are so thankful that he made it. As a precaution we have started feeding and changing out lories bowls 3 times a day and have been extra careful to wash fresh foods.

Tonight Orbit was marching back and forth on my shoulder while I ate my roast, and then tried to make off with my hairtie. He loves to make smacking sounds when he hears other people eatand has learned that declaring "big fluff" while fluffing all of his feathers out will get him lots of praise. Then he shouts "Raaaaaahhhhhhhrrrrrrrrrrr! while viciously pretending to attack my cheek, only to end the display by stretching his head out to rub under my chin. Then he'll pop up so I have to look at him cross eyed and quietly whisper "Hiiiiii." Here's to many more years with our silly little red monster.

Here's Orbit being a little ham tonight when I had him in to keep me company during dinner (after he "borrowed" some of my broccoli of course).

OMG Orbit is absolutely stunning!!! Had to say that first as this is the first time I've seen him. I'm so glad he's made a full recovery! I've had one bad bird illness scare and I know it's horrendous!! Way to go Orbit!!!

On a side note, can I ask you just how messy lories are? I've never actually known anyone who had one, but last year when we first discovered this amazing bird shop in our city, they had one that looked just like Orbit and she was the funniest, cutest thing I've ever seen!!! I wanted her so badly, but one of the employees had already purchased her. They are such awesome birds!!!!

Orbit is very handsome and we all know how much pictures don't do birds any justice. I can only imagine how awesome he looks in person! It sounds like you've had two birdies that really just wanted some one-on-one attention these past few days Glad to hear you've got some good news coming your way. Now it seems as though *you* need some attention, getting in car accidents and such

Some lories are so messy it will make you crazy, others are not so messy. Orbit is a tidy little guy. He rarely ever shoots his poop out to the sides, on the walls, or on the floor. He does spread his food around a bit. Our other lory on the other hand...some days I could just scream. The mess is everywhere - always.

That is absolutely fantastic. Lories can be hardy little things. I'm very happy for you and for Orbit!

Anna, That's great!!! It's a good thing you knew how to tube feed and keep him going. I'm so thrilled he's going to be fine. Such a stunning and humorous guy you have there!
