Wing problem??
Hey guys,
Im sorta new to this forum and would really appreciate if anyone can tell me whats happening to my lory. Ive had my lorikeet (pauly) for about 4 months now and ive realised even before clipping his wings he keeps preening this one area of his right wing. The small area now has no colour only the grey plumage and matchstick type feathers and he keeps picking at it as he seems irritated by it. The rest of his feathes are fine and he acts very normal as i have owned lorikeets before. Can anybody tell me whats going on as im sort of getting a bit worried about it now?? Ill try and take some pictures and post them up tomorrow. Thanks in advance |

Apart from that little patch he looks like he's in great condition. Beautiful feathering and weight and size look great. Is he giving the pins (new feathers) a chance to come through or is he trashing them straight away? My thoughts are there's an irritation there, whether it's a blocked follicle or something.... Needs a physical exam though with a vet to be able to really feel what what's going on and look through the downy feathers.
The problem is after getting rid of the physical issue that's causing the over preening making sure it doesn't become a psychological habit for him to just keep wrecking that area. That's a whole lot harder to sort out then a physical underlying issue. Where abouts are you located and are you happy with the vet that you plan on seeing? If you're not then I'm sure one of us could point you in the direction of someone.

I agree with Abby. I would also have the vet do an exam to see if it's something irritating him. And you do want to get to it before he keeps doing it after the problem is not there any more. You can also spray him wiht aloe juice and water mixed that will help the feathering to where it will be harder for him to get a hold of his feathers.

Thanks for the replys everyone!
Abby - i live in bossley park, sydne, nsw, 2176. I know a vet but i think its like 45 dollars a consultation which i think is pritty pricy. I used to bring my dogs their but dont know how he is with birds. Do you recommend anyone around my area? Oh and Alan that aloe juice your talking about what will that actually do? I had a closer inspection and it looks like he's just cutting the top feathers and the grey visible in the picture is the base part of his other line of feathers. Is their anything i can do from stopping him cutting his feathers like applying something distasteful or bandaging the area??? Dom |
