Another rescue

What is it with wild rainbow lorikeets and smacking their heads into things.

Received a call from a friend last night who'd found one at the park that just wasn't right. They managed to pick it up no issues which is a good sign things aren't right and brought it over. No obvious external injuries. Wings and legs fine. All signs pointed to another concussed lorikeet. Between the call and this guy arriving I'd already set up a cage away from my other birds with towel on the base, nectar mix and water, no perches, blanket over.

Didn't seem brilliant last night but not at deaths door. Hubby was up for work at 530 this morning, walked past and I heard the annoyed screech from the other end of the house. Yep, one lorikeet sounds like he's on the road to recovery. I'll keep him here until probably tomorrow afternoon to make sure all is good then release back where he was found.

This isn't the first concussed lorikeet that I've dealt with. Seem to get them every couple of months. Now I normally would advise people on the board to take the bird to the vet. In my case I do have a medical background and a good knowledge of bird injuries and emergency care. I also know when it's more then I can deal with and have a back up avian vet.

The best part of the process is watching them fly off again.

He kept improving during the day. Was ready to rip my fingers off by early afternoon and screaming at me, a good sign that he was recovered. A rainbow lorikeet who is still suffering from head injuries is very quiet and compliant.

Released him late afternoon and he took off no problems, perfect flight. That's what I like to see.

Some how I think I've become the local wild lorikeet rescue. Ah well, I can deal with that.

My dad found one on the roof of the hospital where he works, I came past to pick it up, it's beak had split vertically (probably from hitting a window) and it was very thin, so I'm guessing it couldn't eat properly with the beak problem.
I put it in a box but by the time I got it home it was stiff, so it must have died the moment I put it in the car.
Heart-wrenching stuff, with two of my own and all, I wouldn't have been so sad if it was a rosella or something, but knowing the character and personality of rainbow lorikeets, I was very sad that it died.
Oh, and I always get a tug on the heartstrings if I see one dead on the road, my poor babies! If I could I would save each and every one of them!
