shortage of lories

Wondering why there is a short supply of these birds. Are they hard to breed, hard to sell, or any other thoughts. Am considering a possible addition to my family in the future. I do own a caique now, so don't know if 2 high energy birds would be too much. Fill me in on the pros and cons of the beautiful lories. Thanks. Sandy

Whereabouts are you?

They are extremely intelligent, playful and curious, but with highly individual personalities. They are bold little things!

Some people don't enjoy the squirty poos and more specialised diet and say they are loud....mine isn't so loud though, it just depends on what kind. Have met some very loud rainbows, my scaly not so much. They have a very quick digestive tract, so you kind of learn not to pick them up just after having eaten, especially if it's something colourful like watermelon haha

I think one of the great things about them is their smell! Know this sounds weird, but to me their feathers and body smell different from other breeds....

I have also read that another reason is that zoos have in the past and still do buy them to use in flights where people can walk in and feed them.

Dunno but there are heaps of them flying around in Sydney. They're everywhere! You can't miss it when a flock of them fly overhead screeching! But you'll notice them more in areas with lots of native trees/shrubs

Matt stole the words right out of my mouth. I looked and looked for almost a year before I found my guy as a rehome, and that was what I was told as well. I have only ever seen one for sale at a bird fair/bird store for sale out of all the years I have kept birds, and that was in New York last August.

Is there a specific type of lory you are interested in and where abouts are you located? That will help us in telling you a little more about their personality and helping find a breeder. I do know that there is a rehome in the kijiji classifieds near me right now, a rainbow lory like I have.

I am in Illinois. I have noticed a few for sale on the internet, but would rather see it in person to see how we would interact with each other.
I am going to wait until the fall to buy a bird-- time to think it through.
I imagine the messy poop is part of the problem and why people don't get overly involved with them. I hear they have a great personality and they are oh, so beautiful. I am going to keep researching. If anyone knows of a good breeder, let me know. Sandy

You could check BirdBreeders.com - Bird Breeders Directory of Availability and Parrot Breeders . They let you search for a species by state. You would have to search for each species not just lories in general.

I wouldn't entirely nix an out of the area breeder. Kai was shipped to me from Texas, over 16 hours away. He came off the flight none the worse for wear other than the fact that he was in a new place. Adjusted quickly and I couldn't imagine my life without him.

I would probably considering shipping if all else failed. You are happy with your choice of a lory ? I have milled around the lory, bh pionus, and rose breasted cockatoo. I could probably be happy with any of them, but the lory seems most interesting to me. Sandy
