Black Lory

Does anyone have any experience keeping a Black Lory as a pet? Can you share, please?

I haven't but a well known Australian lory and lorikeet breeder lists them as his favourite species and reckons they make the best pets out of all the lories. I would imagine they are much the same as any lory/lorikeet personality-wise, with the associated mess and noise of the larger lory species.

Going by darling Abi in this video clip, they would seem to be real charmers!

That video made my day! Too precious. I'd love to be owned by one.

Thanks for that post Rahni! lol I really want a black lory- their colours are beautiful. My favourite colour is anything with black, I just think it looks great- especially fire colours, as well as green, purple and blue (which is all the colours on a black lory) so they are perfect. Also of course their character and personality as lories appeal to me... my dream bird!? I'm watching this thread closely for more information on black lories...

Peter Oderkerken of Brisbane (author of 'A Guide to... Lories & Lorikeets ) thinks they are fantastic and if Abi is anything to go by I'd have to agree. There are a few in Australia, not sure how much they would cost but at a guess I'd say between $1000-$1500 for a handraised. Most of them are in Queensland, as with all other exotic lories! (Note to self... must move to Cairns one of these days...)
I'd also really like a hand-raised black-capped lory, I think they are just beautiful, quite different to the Trichoglossus and Chalcopistta in appearance but definitely a lory personality!
Here's some cute vids of black-caps:

Someone on this forum has one, I think you will find some threads about him on this lory section somewhere. EDIT: Found it, Poe!

They are one of the birds on my wishlist, $4000 for a hand raised one in Australia. Much cheaper in the US, I'm guessing (although probably still a bit expensive).

It seems to be a common opinion that they are among the best lories to be kept as pets (the Chattering Lory seems to be the other one).
Here's a good article about Black Lories as pets: As Good As It Gets
In this particular article, the writer notes that they are a gentle and affectionate species, with a poor talking potential.

Ooh Rahni I want to see that video, will have to get around to digging up my computer speakers. >_>

There was a handraised dusky lory for sale near me- I think it was around $1000- $1600 (can't remember exactly) and was very tempting without such a price tag! Ta for the link WhiteRaven

A friend of mine had a black lory and he was an absolute doll! When the natural sunlight hit his feathers - he was stunning!

They are more prone to iron storage disease which is what he died from and she is experienced in lories - has 5 more of them. They also tend to require more of the actual nectar than other lories do as well as having the dry powder.

As far as personality they are on hundred percent people birds - they love to be with you and interact with you but can get nippy when they get excited.
And don't walk by water of any kind with them on your shoulder or they will be hitting that water for a bath. LOL

They are fantastic little guys and one that I would love to have if I had the space and time. OR the Duyvenbodes.......
