New Pied Rainbow Lorikeet

I've had Axel for a week now, and he is such an amazing bird! On the way home from the airport all he wanted to do was play. He will step up onto anyone and even gave the vet a preen after his check up. I can't believe how friendly he is. I am sooo happy with my new baby whom I've been trying to get since Feb. :D

(sorry about the photo quality)

He is a pied rainbow lorikeet, will be 10 weeks old now (he's 9 weeks in the photos). By two years old most of the green will be replaced by yellow, with just some green left on his wings. The blue on his head will be replaced with red. He is a large bird, even the bird vet was surprised by his size. My last rainbow Zellkai (normal colour) was a big bird but Axel is larger than Zell was at his age.

Congratulations on such a beautiful bird! Rainbow lorikeets have so many vibrant colors normally but, yours is so much more colorful!

What beautiful colors. I didn't realize that there were pied rainbows. Can I ask where you got it from? I'm so glad that he is so playful. Two of my caiques flew in from North Carolina - and I was so worried that they would be scared. They acted like nothing unusual happened - just wanted to eat and be nosey.

I love the lorie's but have never seen that coloration.

As far as I'm aware, rainbow lorikeet mutations are only available in Australia (and possibly New Zealand). I got him from a breeder in Sydney who sent him to Melbourne airport.

I too was concerned that my lorikeet would be a little shaken up from the flight... but nope he walked straight out of his box ready to play. :P

I saw a double factor pied like yours on Saturday. They are so pretty and different. I'm not a big fan of rainbow mutations (just don't visually appeal to me) but ones like yours .
